CV joint/axles

mates,

where are people sourcing cv joints/axles? I've got a grinding noise, worse on turns, that I think is the right side axle. I see some inner joints and boot kits, but that's about it. any suggestions?

Unless the joint has been exposed to grit/dirt and driven hard, the joint should be OK once its cleaned and regreased. I've not seen one that was damaged beyond repair. If yours is, Id suggest a wreckers yard to pick up some used ones.

What year and model do you have and is it engine side or tranny side axle? V6 or 4-cyl? A/T or manual tranny? RHD ot LHD?

TMI no not enough?
91 164L, LHD, auto, ABS, 3.0, engine side. looks like Jason has a used one.
I have it packed up and ready to go out today!
got the same issue on 92 164S 5spd - I believe driver side shaft/cv joint

is it really as easy as pulling the shaft, clean and regrease the joint?
anyone got a used known good one for sale?

thanks
Grinding noise is not the usual symptom of cv failure. When the cv begins to fail it usually begins clicking rhythmically with road speed and usually initially during sharp turns.

If the rubber boot is intact and no signs of grease leaking out it is not likely to be the cv.

Grinding or rumbling is more usually a wheel bearing.
thanks Michael - I have the clicking during right turns and it just has gotten much worse over the last few weeks driving it (to the point where even a slight movement of the steering wheel to the right at freeway speeds produces a noise) - I am certain it is the cv joint (maybe together with something else) but I want to avoid having to pull the axle twice if just re-greasing it will not solve the (cv) issue ...
Which CV joint inner or outer? Is there a bad CV boot on one of them? Sounds like maybe outer one if slightly turning steering wheel makes the clicking noise.

If outer one you pretty much need whole axle if inner one you can replace inner one on axle.

Right and left axles the same on 5-speed models. Left one shorter on A/T models.
Alfisto Steve - pretty sure it's the outer and the boot is old and shows aging cracks but I can't really see a rip through - doesn't mean there isn't one - thanks for the info on both axles being same left and right - that'll make the search easier

Be advised you need major impact gun power to remove axle nut.

'don't have a compressor but did an axle nut few hrs ago on my Saab 900 and I had to fabricate something like a 6 feet extension to be able to loosen it
SAAB uses the same system for securing the axle nut, (wheel bearing retention).

Clicking is a sure sign of wear in the joint. If the CV boot is torn it will leak grease all over it. CV joints tend not to wear if greased and the boots kept intact.

Often it is more sensible to replace the axle unit with boots already installed rather than mess around replacing only the CV joint(s). However, it can be worthwhile having a look inside the outer boot and see if the grease is still there and not contaminated. Sometimes, a clean and repack with fresh grease and a new boot can produce a satisfactory extension to service life of a slightly worn CV joint.
CV joints

Bought from e bay , German company. Is a really quality product.
Flashlight cloth , turn wheel out get on the ground , inspect the CV joints rubber boots , they may seem intact , use your fingers to apply traction to the rubber, if torn buy a temporary cut open boot with grease and glue replace old , just take the wheel of and follow instructions.
COUNT THE NUMBER OF GROOVES ON THE OUTER CV JOINT FOR THE ABS SENSOR , 90 teeth is standard up til somewhere i 1992, after that its 44.
Then order a brand new COMPLETE aksel inner and outer CV joints on an aksel ,from e bay , i got a new one for 225 dollars including shipping from Germany.

Communicate the specs of your car to the seller and they will help you out.

antriebswelle-drynda on eBay

Plan C ebay.it and write semiasse ( halfshaft in Italian , make shure its for the right engine version )
Then follow this excellent blogspot , if I may say so .

William - thanks much for the link

I checked and they have it in stock for €110 and shipping not too expensive.
Will order and report back.

Thanks all for your help
Check with Jason in Flagstaff, AZ he probably has a good complete axle for 5-speed 91-93 with correct ABS outer CV.
