Hi Alfaholics,
I have a series 3 1990 Graduate, some parts are series 3 and other series 4. It's a midyear hybrid that forces me into all sorts of pretzels when buying parts.

I am experiencing some rear end diff crackling noises after driving for some time. It is most noticeable when I have to tackle an incline after driving for more than 20 minutes, and sounds like clink clink clink that matches my speed and goes away after about 5MPH when on flat ground but not at all until I stop if I am parking in my garage, for example. I believe it's the diff but I don't know what specifically. Is this repairable? Is this a complete change out part scenario or are rebuilt ones available? Who does this work, any mechanic or is this something a specialist company needs to handle? Any info from others that might know what this is and how I can go about fixing it would be greatly appreciated. Also, is this dangerous? Should I no longer drive until its fixed or is it something more of a pest?

Seems like in-person diagnosis is called for. Diffs are pretty robust, but not unheard of to have issues. Could be part of the brakes, diff, driveshaft, suspension, exhaust, parking brake, who knows. It's all in play back there when the car is moving. And maybe get it up on a lift and inspect everything closely?
