My Spider's water temperature and oil pressure gauges have never worked, the water temperature seems to just move erratically, so while going about the trouble of replacing the leaking water pump this weekend I'd also like to replace the temperature sensor. Unfortunately I can't figure out where it goes. I found a thread here about it for a 1986 Spider, but can't seem to find out for a 1978.

I found a wire with nothing connected to it that seemed like it could go to a sensor and was in the same general area as on the 1986 I saw on the forum. I took a few pictures when I replaced the radiator hoses, could some one point out where they think the sensor should go? Or if it's elsewhere point me in the right direction?

So you're saying that the sensor I have standing upright should be screwed into where that crimp is resting right now? Interesting. I hadn't tried that, it looked different and bigger, thought the threads wouldn't match. Will have to try that.

that is where it should go, afaik!

...the new sensor looks odd though.
I thought it should be a stubby looking black/brown sensor (more like the one in there already which looks like the male connector has bust off....It might even still be working if you can figure out how to re-connect the terminal)

Interesting. I'll have to take a look. I did some more checking online and found more people selling something like what I bought. I got it from Alfa Parts in Berkeley, so I assumed it was right. Guess I'll find out soon...
