So dad's got a 1973 Spider and I understand he's replaced the centre console - at least he's removed it and done some monkeying around back there.

He tells me that with the console removed, it shifts GREAT!

With the console in place, he has difficulty with 3rd.

Does anyone know if there's a possibility for the console interfering, or maybe if the centre console design changed at all?

Could be one of two things:

How is your transmission mount? When worn, they collapse a bit, and the transmission sinks down and the shifter goes with it. Causes binding.

There's also a pinch bolt under the shifter boot. If it's loose, or not adjusted correctly, your shifter will bind Here's a thorough discussion with pictures: LINK

Awesome, thanks for the quick suggestions - I'll forward these to him (and encourage him to use the forum rather than random mechanic friends! ;) )

Since it sound like the problem began after R/R of the console, I'd suggest loosening all the console mounting screws, shifting the console's position then re-securing the screws. Also make sure the boot is not interfering with full movement of the shifter.
