Hi, my clutch mater reservoir has leaked it's contents over the engine bay, i have removed the reservoir from the master and noted the following.

there is an aluminium washer between the brass nut and the master

the reservoir bottom was covered with some sludgy black goo.

i did not see an o-ring in the master cylinder opening, should i?

is there a seal between the tank and the brass nut that has failed? can this be replaced and if so, how do i separate the tank from the nut?

I believe the threaded base is bonded to the plastic reservoir, and the seal between them and the MC itself is the metal ring you found. Fill the reservoir, plug the hole with your finger, and see where it leaks? There probably is some kind of o-ring between the reservoir and threaded base, but I've never had to separate them. The goo in the bottom of the reservoir is likely old fluid, rust, dirt, backwash decaying rubber seals, etc.
