Maybe it was the PO before the PO? Certainly sounds like you have an earlier block. There are serial #s on the case, left side just next to the bell housing. Right next to the plug that used to be a valve to drain the water. Below #4 exhaust port.

Here's the #: AK01554*604178
From a previous thread a few years ago there is an indication that the engine is from 83-88 by way of the 01554 code. Any idea if this is correct and if 604178 corresponds to a specific year?

After about 1960, Alfa no longer kept records of a specific engine in a specific chassis; they only tracked the engine family, like 00536 for a GTV, 00551 for a US 1750, etc. So if you have the right series, which in a late Spider would be pretty hard to do without, unlike earlier cars, that's probably as close as you're going to be able to find out unless someone wrote the engine number on the invoice, owner's manual, shop receipt, etc.

The upside is, even if you can't determine the original specific engine, neither can anyone else. It's not like Porsche or Ferrari where this stuff is gilded and regarded as super-important.

More clues: The high coolant temp light sensor, normally located just behind spark plug #4 is not there - just a hex plug bolt like all the other cylinders. The temp light wire dangles unconnected next to it. Searching for photos of S3 engines, it seems pre-1986 engines exhibit the same configuration as my engine, that is, hex plug bolt instead of temp sensor. So from the engine #AR01554*604178, can anyone tell the year of this engine?
