Booster or Master?

727 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ecohen2
I have this strange problem with my brakes that I really want to correct. Sometimes after driving on the highway for a long period of time, when I apply the brakes, the pedal goes down significantly further than it does during normal driving. As soon as I let up and press it a second time, its right where it should be.

Any thoughts on whether this is the master or the brake booster? I replaced the vacuum line about a year ago, so I doubt its that....

Thanks,
Ed

Sounds like a master cylinder. Booster would show a very stiff pedal if it failed.

I would think it is the master cylinder. Fluid may be bypassing one of the seals. It has happened to me, I beld the entire system with a pressure bleeder and the problem seemed to go away.
Ok, ill try bleeding the system this weekend and if that doesn't solve it, ill order a new master..

Excessive wheel bearing play can cause caliper piston knockback. This can result in a long brake pedal on first brake application.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, I flushed the entire system with new fluid as well.
Thats what I plan to do...
