G. Bizzarrini picked the Corvette 327 because it was the best engine available in the early 1960s. Even Shelby wanted this engine but Chevrolet did not want competition for the Corvette so Shelby went with Ford. When one designs a race car the location of the distributor is not important - on the Bizzarrini it is under the dashboard.

I learned this lesson when I wanted to change the battery in my Bizzarrini and realized that one of the brake boosters needed to be removed. The battery sits forward of the engine very low near the ground on a solid part of the frame. It seems like the battery could be removed from under the car but the shelf is a solid part of the frame. In a race car the engine is changed more often than the battery.
