I recently upgraded our smaller sister site www.fiatbb.com to a newer version of forum software. While it still needs to have content filled in and dressed up a bit I wanted to get some feedback from the collective here. I'm considering moving AlfaBB to this platform and would like to see what you guys think before hand.

The new platform has lots of potential and tons of new features I think we would all enjoy. Things like groups, photo galleries, searchable photos, etc.... to name a few.

I'd be happy to hear all comments positive and negative.

Thanks

Created account, used smestas as a refferer to be a nice guy (some forums 'score' members by reference, so hey, one more point for the man, right? :) ) and carried on with login.

Have to imagine it dressed up as it's still way on the generic side, but obviously still a WIP.

Regarding the 'quick navigation' dropdown link at the bottom of forum pages?

Yeah, you might wanna trim that back what's listed there or if possible edit the descriptors as right now it takes as long to scroll through the compacted list as it does to just return to the main page and roll down to the section you want.

EG: 'Fiat news' subsection which is a filled 'show 20 topics per page' example, the dropdown doubles the length of the exisiting page plus a little more.

IOW, 'navigation' yes, 'quick' no, especially when the longer titled sections have their name compressed/carriage returned every couple words and then stacked taking up more line space yet.

EG, one section title, 3 lines, of which there are several, but tha majority are 2 lines each which still creates a heck of a stackup:
Fiat 850 Sedan,
Spider & Coupe (1966
1985)

Conversely, the 'quick links' at the top of the page in the header bar could be expanded a bit. Like mabe search and userCP. (*yes, I saw the 'advanced search' at the other end of the bar, but there's gonna be folks who will hit the quick links 1st onnaconna it's like right there in the top dead center begging to be clicked)

***

Fair pile of user CP options, but not so much to make me want to change formats. Profile privacy is a bit tedious as it (in theory) should be delt with already via forum settings but isn't.

***

Currently it's not giving permission to view what's behind the 'home' tab curtain. Presumably because it's not been created yet?

Didn't see any ready means to search photos or attachments so couldn't comment on how well that works.

It is something that would be of use to be sure, but depending on how the search is generated is going to require people to get away from filenames like 24fhrs93sdfdxx-3 for thier photos if anyone is to find them by searching for a keyword like 'bushing' or 'battery box'. Otherwise it'll be useless unless the keyword is text in a given post and the attachement also happens to be in that very same post which isn't always the case.

Same goes by searching for attachment/picture by username instead of what the pic/attachment is: if someone doesn't know who posted it, then where do you begin looking?

Or did I miss something brutally obvious (I didn't strain myself looking) that makes it a cakewalk compared to what we sometimes have to go through now?

Good suggestion. I've removed it. It also helped to lower the number of querys to make pages load faster.

Thanks Darren for all the great feedback. I'm off to go make more changes.

No provision for attachment upload via PC yet I take it?

I see where it'll link from an existing website, but the 'home computer' option, while present isn't 'hot' and drag-n-drop sure don't do it LOL

Not a super big deal I suppose, but for those of us who don't host web pages or have a myspace/facebook/archival album online somewhere it could make things a bit rough.

(unless of course you've not gotten to that yet, in which case nevermind :D )

I cannot see the left edge of the screen (about the first column of text) on my notebook. I'll have to see what it looks like on my desktop computer. I had not been on the site since last year about October but it was nice to see I could quickly and easily delete the porn someone sent me as a PM. It also looks like you gave the purveyor of said porn the boot, as his user name was not valid.
