I just got my hands on a LS rear end. It came with 1 thick axle but was missing the second axle. I have read I can use the axles from my old rear end. They are much lighter and are in better condition. I will be using this set up on my 1750 GTV. Why did Alfa go to the thicker heavier axles and do I need to do this? And where can I find a thick axle I'm missing ?

Axle

The spline size and bearing size is what counts. Commonly they post 1972 cars had the same splines (Over Here) If the splines are smaller you need a 2 liter axle (larger).

Engine size was reason for the beefier axles.

FWIW, the factory GTA program rifle-bored the axles for weight savings. The center of a rod contribute little to the torque strength, so it's a no-harm mod, but boy is it a difficult piece of machine work.
