AROC Hudson Valley Tour - Sep 15, 2007
Join us for the annual Fall Tour! We are extending the invitation to anyone who would like to come - you do not have to be a member of the AROC-NJ to partake in this tour. Do RSVP please, since it really helps with planning. You may send me an e-mail message (my PM is very full so please send an e-mail) and I'll send you the contact phone numbers.
This event is organized by AROC member Scott Klion, and he simply does a superb job putting together a great drive, with plenty of stops and visit to cool places. You are encouraged to bring your significant other. My wife is not a car person at all, and usually skips my car activities, but this is one tour she actually looks forward to, and never misses.

WELCOME TO THE 2007 AROC-NJ HUDSON VALLEY TOUR. WE ARE GLAD THAT YOU COULD JOIN US FOR WHAT PROMISES TO BE A FUN AND EXCITING ADVENTURE IN GROUP MOTORING. THERE ARE, HOWEVER, SOME BASIC RULES WE WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO OBSERVE WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, THIS IS NOT A RACE OR A RALLY. THIS IS A TOUR DESIGNED PRIMARILY FOR EACH OWNER TO ENJOY HIS OR HER CAR WHILE DRIVING ALONG SCENIC ROADS IN THE COMPANY OF THOSE SIMILARLY CAR-CRAZY. YOU THEREFORE NEED FOCUS ONLY ON THE VEHICLE AND THE ROAD IN FRONT OF YOU.
SECOND, THERE ARE NO PRIZES TO BE WON. CONSEQUENTLY, POINTS WILL NOT BE AWARDED FOR BOLD PASSES, TWO WHEEL SLIDES, FOUR WHEEL DRIFTS, OR APEX TURNS. PLEASE EXERCISE DISCRETION AND DRIVE SAFELY, ESPECIALLY ON SOME OF THE TWISTING, NARROW AND LIMITED-SIGHT-DISTANCE ROADS WE WILL BE NEGOTIATING DURING THE TOUR.
FINALLY, IT IS OUR INTENTION TO STAY TOGETHER AND ENJOY THE DRIVE AS A GROUP. TO THAT END, WE WILL USE OUR HIGH BEAMS AS A PRIMARY MEANS OF COMMUNICATION. FLASHING THEM MEANS THAT THE GROUP SHOULD PULL OVER, EITHER BECAUSE SOMEONE GOT CAUGHT AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN OR BECAUSE SOMEONE NEEDS A PIT STOP BECAUSE OF A MECHANICAL OR MEDICAL EMERGENCY.
SO, IF YOU WANT TO PULL OVER OR YOU SEE THAT THE CAR BEHIND YOU GOT CAUGHT AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN, FLASH YOUR HIGH BEAMS. AND IF YOU SEE THAT THE CAR BEHIND YOU IS FLASHING ITS HIGH BEAMS, THEN FLASH YOUR HIGH BEAMS AS WELL. THIS WAY, “WORD” WILL EVENTUALLY GET TO THE LEADER WHO WILL THEN PULL OVER AT THE FIRST SAFE PLACE TO DO SO.

I. Staging – 8:30 am to 9:00 am
Location: Staging will take place at Il Cena Cola Restaurant, South Plank Road (Route 52), Newburgh, New York.
Directions: From New Jersey, take the NYS Thruway north to Exit 17 – Newburgh. Bear right after the toll booth to merge onto Route 300 North. As you pass the Stop’n’Shop on your left, get into the left lane. When the right lane ends, get into the middle lane (which is a left turn only lane). Make the left at the light (there is a Dairy Queen on your left) onto Route 52. Il Cena Cola is on your right about ½ mile up the road.
For planning purposes, Exit 17 is about 30 minutes from where, in Mahwah, Routes 17 North and 287 North converge with the NYS Thruway. Il Cena Cola is about five minutes from the exit.
Notes: Please arrive with your car tank full and “the other tank” empty. We need to leave promptly at 9:00 am as we have a tight schedule.
II. Stage One – Newburgh to Gardiner
ETD: 9:00 am (from Newburgh).
ETA: 9:20 am (at Tantillo’s Orchards).
Destination: Tantillo’s Orchards (fresh-picked apples, hot cider doughnuts and award winning pies); Wright’s Farm Stand (amazing variety of homemade jams and jellies).
Routing: Route 52 West to Route 208 North.
Sights: Wallkill River (one of the few rivers that run north), Wallkill (home of Borden Farms); Shawangunk Correctional Facility (no stopping for hitchhikers).
Notes: You will have 20 minutes for shopping and sampling. Wright’s offers home-made jams and jellies and more, all of which you can taste. Tantillo’s has (in my humble opinion) superior apples, and their pies should be a controlled substance. The two stands are 100 yards apart. Please be ready to go in the Tantillo parking lot at 9:40 am.
III. Stage Two – Gardiner to Mt. Tremper
ETD: 9:45 am (from Tantillo’s Orchards).
ETA: 11:30 am (at the Emerson Country Store and Kaleidoscope).
Destination: The Emerson Country Store (see “Shopping and Attractions” at www.emersonplace.com); the world’s largest kaleidoscope ($5 per person for a 10 minute show that runs continuously).
Routing: Denniston Road, Sand Hill Road, Albany Post Road, Bruyn Turnpike, loop around Watchtower Farm, Route 7, Route 44/55, Berme Road, Route 55, Peekamoose Road, Route 28A, Route 28.
Sights: Watchtower Farm (world headquarters of the Jehovah’s Witnesses); high altitude views of the Hudson Highlands (looking east from Route 44/55) and the Catskills (looking west from Route 44/55); Eastern New York Correctional Facility (recently featured on TV for its unprecedented college degree program for inmates); Rondout Reservoir (part of the NYC water system).
Notes: Watchtower is an impressive complex made up of a printery, winery, church, orchard, cattle farm, crop farm, and more. Majestic View Stables (left side along Route 7, underneath Millbrook Mountain) raises rare Peruvian Paso horses with a gait that completely eliminates all up and down motion along the center of the horse. If time, there will be a short stop at one of the overlooks along the Rondout Reservoir. On Peekamoose Road, because there may be some spirited driving at times on this section of the tour, be sure to remain alert and leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you as it may suddenly stop or slowdown due to a cyclist, waterfall (there are four along the way on the left) or wildlife. At Emerson Place, you will have 40 minutes to poke around the store. Be sure to leave time to visit the adjoining kaleidoscope – it’s a trip.
IV. Stage Three – Mt. Tremper to Woodstock
ETD: 12:10 pm (from the Emerson Country Store).
ETA: 12:30 pm (at Landau’s Grill in Woodstock).
Destination: Landau’s Grill for lunch on the patio. Look for street parking after we make the right turn at the public plaza in town. Or park in the municipal lot ($5) behind Landau’s Grill (the entrance is on the left just before the restaurant). Enjoy lunch and some free time to explore the town.
Routing: Route 40, Route 45, Route 212.
Sights: Hippies, movie stars, galleries and more.
Notes: Lunch will be from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm at the Landau Grill. For those who prefer more time to schmooze around Woodstock, a faster, less-sophisticated, take-out lunch is available across the street at Bread Alone (which also sells fresh-baked breads). You will have until 3:00 pm to walk the town and relax. We will stage at the Bank of America parking lot on the left side of Route 212, just east of town.
V. Stage Four – Woodstock to Cragsmoor
ETD: 3:00 pm (from the Bank of American parking lot).
ETA: 4:30 pm (at the Stone Church in Cragsmoor).
Destination: Stone Church in Cragsmoor (National Historic Landmark)
Routing: Route 375, Route 28, Hurley Mountain Road, Mill Road, Route 3, Route 209, Route 52.
Sights: Farmland, the Ridge, Ellenville, Rondout Valley, the Old Stone Church.
Notes: Do not speed on Route 28 – it has become a major source of revenue for the town of Hurley police department! Hurley Mountain Road, on the other hand, has a few sections we might take advantage of to clean out our cylinders. Ellenville is a charming town undergoing a bit of renaissance as of late. Cragsmoor is a former artists’ colony populated years ago by graduates of the Hudson Valley School. The Old Stone Church will transport you to Provence. We will have 20 minutes to enjoy the church and its views.
VI. Stage Five – Cragsmoor to Gardiner
ETD: 4:50 pm (from the Old Stone Church).
ETA: 5:30 pm (at Whitecliff Vineyards in Gardiner).
Destination: Whitecliff Vineyards, Gardiner, New York.
Routing: Route 52, Bruyn Turnpike, Hoagerburgh Road, Burnt Meadow Road.
Sights: Pine Bush (like Sedona, reputed to be one of the Earth’s energy vortexes); Blue Chip Farms (for a photo op); Whitecliff Vineyards (for wine-tasting, music and sunset-watching on the deck).
Notes: When we pass Blue Chip Stables on Hoagerburgh, we will pull over for a group photo as the stable grounds provide a spectacular backdrop. Whitecliff wines should do well to prime our systems for dinner. We will leave for dinner at 6:00 pm when Whitecliff closes.
VII. Stage Six - Dinner
ETD: 6:00 pm (from Whitecliff Vineyards).
ETA: 6:05 pm (at Lombardi’s).
Destination: Lombardi’s in Gardiner.
Routing: Route 7.
Sights: Millbrook Mountain, ring bread, foccacio.
Notes: Abbodanza! Dinner should end by 7:30 pm for those who wish to return home. For those who plan to stick around for the Rhinebeck Car Show, I suggest that you stay in Kingston. Most of the major hotel chains are represented there, right off the Thruway and less than 30 minutes from Rhinebeck. On Sunday, you can visit the show, go antiquing in Rhinebeck and Hyde Park, visit FDR’s home and other noteworthy mansions, and/or enjoy the Taste of New Paltz festival at the Ulster County Fairgrounds in New Paltz. I will be at the Rhinebeck show with my GTV.
