Hi
I know there are lots of posts on this subject but as
yet no definitive answer.
The first colour card shows them being the same colour.
The second shows just AR 501 which looks a bit lighter
The third photo shows what looks like an original paint job in a darker red
than the brochure on the bonnet.

Ciao Shane,
Trust all’s well :)
There’s no clear cut answer! Suggest you ring Michael @ Still-One as he’s an Alfa/Glasurit paint specialist.

Io sto bene, grazie e tu ?
I do prefer the darker shade.
The car has been sprayed with 2 pack etch prime with a baby blue shadow coat.
Just waiting for a Lotto win or an Australian version of Car SOS.

If the color chips are true spray outs there still could be a variation in the color using the same code. Some modern paint codes could have 20 variants all listed as the same paint code. It is best to use the paint code as a guide and dial in the color you want. You can pick the color from a chromatic deck and check the ingredients against the paint code formula and if the weights are a little different but its the color you want go for it. With color if it looks right then it is right. Too many years in the automotive color world.

The added problem is that here in Australia with our lovely extra strong sun light all the
original painted cars I have seen have faded to an almost orange colour.

Hi Shane,
give Tim at zoo auto a call, he knows his colours well, I have a 101 giulia sprint in red and its a bit darker than the later cars, as reds go it quite nice.

cheers Ian

This is 501 red...
2019-San-Marino-Motor-Classic Sports Car Digest.jpg
...painted last year by a shop used by Santo's Italian of Northridge, Ca. Parked next to other "reds" it looks redder vs more orangy tints (unless they're also 501).

This is AR501 The painter and I looked at several formulas and picked the one that did not have the orange tint. This is one of those colors that the balance of the toners that make up the color have to be just right. It is not a bad idea to have a control sample and pick a color from a chromatic deck that matches your sample. It may be assigned to another car brand but that does not matter. Alfab4u AR501 looks spot on. My car was sprayed in Standox, Standoblu water base base coat. The water base toners tend to produce cleaner colors and cover in fewer coats. This red covered in 1.5 coats and has a thickness of about 1.2mil. The thin paint film makes for a more stable paint job.

My 64 Sprint GT, supposedly the very first red production GT, was painted a very clear bright red with zero orange tints in it under any light. The best red I've seen on an Alfa, IMHO (there is a picture of it somewhere in this BB but I cannot find it now, alas). Don't know the paint number.

Don't know how to search for all my previous posts, it was numbered 7xx in one of the categories, but can't seem to find it any more.

paperwork from Marco Fazio says alfa red, so if you can find the code for Alfa red in 1962 its a start. just not Farina red.

I have found a sample of the colour I want on the under side of a step front bonnet.
Notice was colour the undercoat is . I wonder how much it affects the top coat.
