Hi All,

The BOSCH EGD 1/12 AR20 will also fit the 1900 engine

but I cannot find for what car this was used

Franco, up to about 2 years ago, one could research Bosch part numbers in the technical archive of Bosch Classic. Now, they only provide an email address and phone number for inquiries (see here) -- but it may be worth for you to ask them for an applications list (what car models used a specific part number) and/or car model list (what Bosch parts were supplied for a specific car model).

Hi Franco and Ruedi,

An old document that I could consult, coming from the internal research department from Portello, even written by hand on 8-9-1954 mentions that the EGD1/12 AR20 was tested on the 2000 Sport engine ( In 1954 ? ... the Sportiva ?).
The EGD1/12 AR20 had also Alfa 1900 part # 1306.63005.

In short it says:
The first starter failed after 62 km, it made a short circuit between the field coil and the rotor.
A second one had the same problem on the test bench in the Sala Prova after 2 hours. So both were very quickly damaged.

Then, several EGD1/12 AR20 starters were tested and many of them showed the same problem, even brand new starters.

A foot note says that MABO, that was then the cooperation between Marelli and Bosch, decided to stop delivering the EGD1/12 AR20 and exchanged it for the EGD1/12 AR24 on which special attention was given to the locking of the field coils.

So was the Bosch EGD1/12 AR20 actually used on 1900 engines ? That is not sure. At least it was not listed in the 1900 catalogs.

Rgds,

Thierry

Hi All,

I have old original Bosch documentation :

The coils in AR 20 are not the same as in AR24 the rotor is the same .

maybe the heat from exhaust was /is the problem , there is original a heatshield between starter and exhaust tube from 4th cylinder .

FYI
coils from AR 20 , and other parts are also used in all the other bosch EGD starters for Mercedes ford bmw and more

Hi Franco

This confirms the note from the internal S.E.S. at Portello ( see post # 5 ) that there was a problem with the coils and that Bosch took this serious by replacing those coils, resulting also in the change of the Bosch number from AR 20 into number AR 24 .

Thanks for all this nice info on starters, how did you get this info Thierry?
And if I may ask, can anybody maybe give an idea which starter is more reliable? The Bosch AR24 or the Marelli MT23A. Both were used on the 1308 engine.

Hi All,

The Bosch starters are better then the Marelli's

and original NOS and NEW Bosch parts are easy to get because these were also used on several EU cars like Mercedes BMW Ford and more .

Marelli parts are very rare .
