So I bought an Alfa new in 1975. Around that time I also had a friend that had a 72 GTV. Until a few weeks ago I had never sat in another Alfa.

I am planning on retiring soon, and I decided that I will screw around with old cars for something to do. I am having a 2 car garage (currently under construction) added to my house; this will go along with the single car garage on the other side of the house.

I have been keeping an eye out for my first project car. I’ve made a couple of stabs on cars on ebay, but didn’t land anything. Also considered some cars on the BB. Recently I purchased a 164S offered here on the BB.

I was looking for cars that needed a lot of labor, but not a lot of parts. Since I will be paying myself $0/hr, labor is not a problem, but expensive parts are. This seems to be the only way to keep from going way underwater on a project. Since I have been maintaining my Alfetta for over 40 years, I have wound up personally rebuilding everything except for the engine and trans (these were done by Alfa specialists). I am hoping to avoid doing engines and trans for the initial projects.

For the last month I have been driving the 164 about 50% of the time; this is giving me a feel for the car and what it needs. As soon as my new garage is finished, I will put my Mazda 626 beater car (230K miles) in there for about a month. I want to replace some original parts and I need to repaint the hood (the clearcoat has failed there).

Then I will put the 164 in there and strip the interior down to the insulation and wiring. After that is put back together, I will drive it around some more. Then I plan to put it back in the garage and strip the engine compartment down to the short block, the trans, and the ABS pump. After putting things back together, I’ll drive it around some more. Then I will put it up on jack stands and take off the suspension and brakes. Put things back together and drive around some more. The last thing will be the body exterior. I have to paint the cladding and skirts, but I am undecided about the body panel paint; I might just touch it up. I’ll have plenty of time to decide about that.

I worked on a couple of things so I can drive it around until I tear it apart and refresh everything. While waiting for the garage completion, I have started some rolling restoration projects. I pulled out the rear seats and touched them up. Before and after pictures below.

I like your retirement plans - and your 164 looks good, glad to see another one getting a well deserved treatment :smile2:

I think yer nutz :) but you have good taste in cars!! I like white 164's. I've seen one that I can remember. Young kid at Mr Steve's has/had it. I can't recall ever seeing another in the flesh. Retirement is nice, been at it for 14 years. Ciao, Chris

The very first 164 I laid my eyes on was an all white S while on a trip to Cal many years ago. I mean ALL white, the body, the skirts, the wheels. Really stood out, in a California way I guess, lol. It hurt my eyes big time.

And yes, I like retirement as well, having been retired since '98. Busier now than when I was fully employed, and in better physical condition, no more desk work.

My befores and afters rear seats

The befores are the ones from white 164 I am rehabbing and the afters are the spare set i had in the attic from parts cars gone bye.

Have some stitch work to be done on afters bottoms.

I'm amazed that back seat was in such bad condition, as usually, those end up still pristine as the rest of the car is let go.

Nice selection of car to restore Tom. I have enjoyed my 164-S since it was new! There is something lacking in older Italian rubber and foam (UV stabilizers?) that causes it to disintegrate. My speakers were replaced about 10 years ago. How does your headliner look? They usually sag from the ceiling after about 15 years because the foam backing fails.

What did you and Steve use on the leather to rejuvenate it? Both turned out very nice.

Front Speaker Repair

I found a pair of 6" round speakers that came off in a race car build a couple of decades ago. So I decided to use those in the front and transplant the coax tweeters from the OE speakers onto these speakers.
The fronts went back on the car today.
I am going to repair the rears. I bought a repair kit of the foam speaker surrounds, and watched some Youtube videos of repairs. Looks pretty straightforward. I will work on the rears soon.

Front Headliner Trim

The front headliner trim was busted up in the region of the rear view mirror. A little epoxy, fiberglass cloth, Pliobond, and thin aluminum made things better.

Instrument Pod

I had obtained an L instrument pod surround to replace mine, as the leather had curled up in places (see first photos).
While I had the pod off the car, I was going to address several other issues. My speedometer was reading way higher than actual, I wanted to fix my low fuel warning light that was coming on way too early, and I wanted to remove the dreaded black goo that was covering the black plastic inner shroud behind the clear plastic lens.

I will post a separate thread that covers the fuel warning light mod.

I used ChazzyD's method to tweak the pot behind the tach, and then verified with a test drive with a GPS unit. Thanks CD!

I used alcohol to remove the black goo, then painted the inner surface of the inner shroud with black bumper and trim paint. I used some plastic polish on the clear lens.
Reassembled and put the pod back on the car.

car looks very nice.

The original S leather cowls, if left untreated and unprotected from the sun, warped badly as the leather shrank from the heat and UV. The used S I bought out of Florida had a very warped one, and finally bought a used S cowl from a not very sunny local, was only slightly warped. Have kept it treated, and covered ever since when the car is not being driven. Still looks pretty nice.

I might buy a B/L cowl someday, just in case. Cheaper than having mine recovered as original. with matching leather and thread.

Sounds like a good plan and what I did. Keep it original, SEM bumper paint works well to repaint or touch up. Give me a buzz if you need anything or just some advice. ;) Looks like I great project. I swear I have seen that car before.

I certainly hope 18 and 19 are tounge in cheek - tho I see nothing to indicate it is. Otherwise it is whiny and downright unFRIKKINbelievable.

On the thread, I was looking at the backside of the headliner pic and wondering to my self, "why's it look funny"? The it dawned on me. There's a big hole in the middle. Duh Chris..... Rossa doesn't have a hole in the roof. Great thread. ciao, chris
