There truly are Spiders that go for an extraordinary price (even more than what is being asked for this one), but those are concours competitive cars. In those cases, it is justified for those cars could not be reproduced even for the extraordinary asking price and it is quite a commitment, in time and money, to maintain a car at a high concours level throughout the years. The car advertised on craigslist is not one of them, as is very evident from the pictures. The car offered could be best described as an "unmolested driver", which is nice, but way under the asking price.

Well, it's pretty simple - just find one owner of a national concours competitive 80's Spider who is willing to sell it for $22k or less, or OTOH find someone who has bought a national concours competitive car for $22k or less within the last two years...

BTW, owners of concours competitive cars are pretty meticulous and pay attention to detail. For example, they would never confuse the spelling of an Alfa "Spider" with "spyder".

'Spyder' might ba 'a' correct spelling, but I don't think it's how Alfa spelled it. All of my manuals say 'Spider'.

Any pre-war Alfas referred to as 'Spyder'?

I saw a 63 thunderbird in this guy's yard once and went to talk to him because I have one too. I asked him if he wanted to sell it; he did not even blink and said $35K " Thats what they go for," he said. At the time mine was worth about $1200 and his was no better than mine. This guy is a snow salesman or thinks a TZ2 and a Spider got to be the same kind of Alfa.

On the spider/spyder thing I read that Ferrari used Spyder for his '49 166. The name was miss translated, Spider which was a fast open Old Western two person wagon. It was corrected in time, as we all became more sophisticated.

He did not even blink!

I lived along time in Italy as a bodyman, and it is not uncommon to see the spelling spyder on cars /parts, now how this became an issue is beyond me.
all I said was that the particular car is not worth 22k and a concourse 80's vintage worth that kind of dough is questionable.
as tom gtv6 mentioned not all alfa's were created equal.
I am ending here before someone might not like how i spelled gran sport or something

Perhaps my post came on bit too strong, but rest assured that there is no animosity on my part, nor is there a desire to argue, much less a desire that would lead you to stop posting. We all simply share our experiences and opinions here. That's what makes the BB a great place to converse.

We are in full agreement that this particular car is way, way, overpriced. I do think that we don't agree on what a concours quality car is worth. There's nothing wrong with that. After all, in order for a car to establish it's worth there has to be a buyer. About the "spyder/spider" dialogue, it's not an issue for me. I do know that many marques have labeled their examples "Spyder". I was just pointing out that Alfa Romeo never referred to its '80s vintage cars as anything but "Spiders". I don't quote Wikipedia simply because, as has been mentioned many times before, it is not accepted as a credible source, since anyone on the internet can simply write whatever they feel is accurate.

The key point being 'a' buyer.

99% of us could think a car is over priced, but all a seller needs to do is find a single buyer who's willing to pay his price. Whether we agree or not doesn't matter, that's what that car was worth, at that time, to somebody.

I'm with Geezer in that respect, if the seller can get it, all the power to him. Although I would hope that a buyer with that kind of money would hold out for a perfect car..

Btw, all of my cars are for sale. If you have to ask the price, you can't afford them!
