Hello Forum,

I'm thinking about realizing a Alfetta coupe with a V8 engine that has it,s Roots in the Montreal 2.6 engine. Is there anybody in the Forum, who has done such a conversion before? The Main Problem is, I think, that the normally mounted Gearbox to Block needs a Substitute. The ones of the transaxle Chassis will Not fit to the mountings of the V8 Block.

There Must exist a Solution, because they offered V8 GTVs in a few Number.

I'll Be happy, if anybody can help.

that would greatly depend on how stock youd like to go vs how deep your pockets are.....
i wonder if a milnao/gtv6 transaxle could handle a "stock" monty 8...if so all youd need to really do is come up with a flywheel and a modified bell from a v6 ..likely nothing more than a spacer and adaptor plate

the other option would be going with a trans in the tradional location and modifying the floors

or the deep pocket route..a transaxle from something else....porsche perhaps?

obviously that only covers the engine to trans..no0t the brain work exhaust and all the other little things that are going to pop up

Hi Shortlife,

thanx for your comment. I don't like the idea of an Adaption plate between the bell and the Engine block. I'm looking for a matching Bell, that fits to the V8 and the chassis of the GTV like the V6 does. I'll care about these other "little" problems after I solved this
basically missing link.

Alfetta GTV 2.6i V8/

Manualfa, I think Gabor K. is your man. He has done or helped to do or knows quite well someone who has done exactly that conversion, I think.

There is a lot of myth and speculation behind the GTV 2.6i V8. As a matter of fact, a German importer/dealer (his name was Reiff, I think) tried to build a series of perhaps 20 but only two or three were actually made. It seems there was some disagreement between Alfa and Mr Reiff. Although the cars look a "factory" effort, details such as the 2.600 badge in the rear hatch looks as an afterthought. I bet it was a BMW 2800 badge suitably modified.

AMS or RallyRacing actually tested one of Reiff's cars and the scans can be found somewhere in the Internet.

Then there are the "works" cars with offshore-spec 3.0 V8s and 300 PS and alloy bodywork but that's a completely different story.

There is info about both in AlfaBB although usually mixed-up. By the way, remember that in the US "GTV" refers mostly to the Bertone 105s and not to the Alfettas...

Good luck with your project!

Good luck with that. Unless the bloke in Germany who was planning on building 20 has 17 spare bellhousings lying around, you're not going to find one that fits without an adaptor plate.

Bell housing mount

There is little stress on the rear housing/mount. No reason not to use an adaptor plate. V6 bellhousing/mounts are Magnesium alloy not Aluminum so adaptor plate is easier than welded cut & paste unit.

Looked into this myself. The job is simple for a handy person....but it is not cheap for what you get (on paper). I would not complete the conversion without a flat plane crank (personally)...then theres some serious cash in the engine. All to end up with a slow v8...don't get me wrong, the sound and the look of those cam covers under the bonnet would be enoug for me alone, but Hp wise, a complete waste of money....Nice wide banks though...Hmm, space for a blower?...now THAT would be nice....and quick.

Good luck! At leasst you are near the right countries, I looked at improting engines to Aus and it just gets very expensive quickly. They are in Aus, but hard to come by.

agreed the GTV6 will always be better and ideal...as for the v8..i wonder what a good hilborn injection modified to modern injections could pull out of the engine...or twin turbo.....course a blower....would only look good if you managed to keep it under the hood

Alfetta W/v8

I believe that Autodelta did create single and dual v8 engine Alfetta Cars in the 80's for rally use. I may have some old photocopies of photographs from Autodelta info I have stored. I will take a look. Alfa of course developed the v6 later. Probably due to the higher cost of the v8 Montreal based engine.

better off with a big bore v6 or if you must do a v8, use an alloy chev which is compact and cheaply available with upwards of 400hp

lexus quad cam v8 is the obvious choice I would have thought...small 4ltr, and does not need opening until you hit>600hp...oh and at anywhere from 400-1500 for the engine....well...a no brainer :)...and yes, its been done.

Have you guys driven a Monty? The engine and gear box are sublime. There's more to it than just hp figures.
If money wasn't an issue you would look at Ferrari engines I guess. Agree with Mike that the lexus engine would be good value but it will never be italian. An alfa powered alfetta GTV V8 will always be the ultimate alfetta for me. Unless I could fit a flat 12 f1 engine in there.
