Alfa Romeo Serpent

I remember reading about the history of the Alfa Romeo logo and the serpent. To my recolection the serpent was swallowing the sword of an enemy. This is what I've always believed it was. Last night I was surfing the web and I read on a guys site that the serpent was swallowing a man? So my question is what is the real history behind the logo and is it a man or a sword that the serpent is swallowing?

The History

This is my understanding from this book.

"...the owners combined two symbols that had been associated with the city of Milan since the Crusades: a red cross and a serpent swallowing a man. The red cross is an obvious Christian symbol of medieval heraldry. The man in the serpents mouth is a Saracen (a muslim), so the serpent motif recalls the Christians Crusaders' defeat of teh infidels, a fact that is probably not detailed in certain of Alfa's current marketing areas." - Alfa Romeo Owner Bible Author: Pat Braden
I found a some good Alfa Romeo history here.

Check it out its good reading and a well done Alfa site.

I was told by a guy who worked for Alfa that it's actually a BABY.
I was so shocked when I heard that.:(

Years ago, a club member told me their definition of the Alfa logo.

The red cross represents the hospital one goes to after crashing their Alfa. The serpent in the shape of a dollar sign represents all the money one pours into their Alfa will eat them alive.

(not in the first person so I wouldn't jinx anyone)

Serpenty Goodness

This page has some cool info that I didn't know before stumbling onto it.

Most interesting, is the fact that the person is (evidently) not being devoured, but being born, springing full-formed from the serpent's jaws.

While on the subject, anybody out there got an ALFA tattoo? (thinking about it, myself).

Cheers.
Interesting... but was then converted to look as if the serpant was being eaten.

It's all twisted to me now. I'll just keep driving the car. Definitly a cool site.

As for Alfa Tattoo's, never seen one.
i once saw a girl with a serpent tatoo on her ankle. looked kinda cool.
When I was 19 and driving my first Spider, I thought about getting a full logo Alfa tat on my left shoulder. Realizing that I'd then have to drive around in sleeveless shirts, I changed my mind.

Hell, if I were drunk enough, I'd probably still get one. heh

I knew I saw one on a website before and it took me a bit to find it. I saw this picture on fellow BB member Ziko's Israel Alfa Club site.

That's what I'm talking about, (probably just the serpent for me, though)

So, now we need to organize a drinking/tattooing/ALFA celebrating party....
I forgot to add the part where my wife would kill me!

We could do a web-cam Alfa tatoo-a-thon.
