The Alfa Romeo GTV (Gran Turismo Veloce) is a car with body coupe produced by Italian car maker Alfa Romeo from 1995 to 2005. The GTV is also known by fans GTV 916 (from the same number it has given life to the coupe) to distinguish it from ancestors. It was designed by Enrico Fumia for the Pininfarina design center and premiered at the Paris Motor Show in 1994. The model was replaced in 2005 by the Brera.
It was the last car brand Alfa Romeo factory in Arese assembled in the historical fact in 2000 the production was transferred to the lines of the Pininfarina plant [2] and San Giorgio Canavese Grugliasco (both in the province of Turin). To coincide with the displacement of production, the GTV has been aesthetically updated application on the side of the typical mark next to the words in F major Pininfarina design.

The GTV is characterized by low body, broad and flattened to the ground, has a line wedge characterized by steeply sloping windshield and rear window and tail truncated by massive pillars, from which comes the typical V in the bonnet which is to incorporate the Alfa Romeo typical shield with the ends split the classic circular lights [3], the sides are then crossed by a deep vein that wants to emphasize the dynamism of the car. The trunk has a volume of 155 liters while the tank holds up to 74 liters of fuel.
The design was developed in the Centro Stile Fiat Coupe Pininfarina parallel to the project in 1994 and both had to be developed for the floor type 3 (common Tempra Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia Dedra 155) appropriately amended. Worked on it for the GTV Enrico Fumia for the Fiat Coupe American Chris Bangle.
However, for the design of the GTV Fumia took strong inspiration from a prototype of the 1980 Pininfarina always used for a coupe based on the mechanics of the Audi Quattro, Audi Quartz [4]. We note the many similarities between the more pronounced side groove almost identical, the shape of the front bumper, the front fanaliera four small round headlights and rear license plate from a single block with the bumper taken almost unchanged from the prototype mentioned.
It features a fine leather interior that was even used by the Ferrari 456 GT. The roomy front was pretty good for a coupe, rear view differently the conformation sports car [5], while presenting the real seat head restraints and was not particularly high. The driving position is typically with sports leather steering wheel adjustable for height and depth and instrumentation move reminiscent of the great sports of the past that Alfa Romeo .

The basic platform is front-wheel drive with a rear subframe on active self-supporting and self-steering and aluminum five-link rear suspension with multiple (multilink) and front MacPherson-type evolved. Initially relied on rims 15 "or 16" tires with 195 to 205/50, following in the base model 16-inch tires with 205 and 17-inch 225/45 rubber. The braking system consists of four-wheel discs, with ventilated front, assisted by ABS and EBD on the cars launched after 1998. Cup and V6 versions are equipped with 4-piston Brembo front discs and 305 mm.
The transmission is entrusted to a manual five-or six-speed. The car was equipped with the debut of two engines, the 2.0-liter Twin Spark, 150 horsepower and a 2.0 cm ³ TB Busso V-6 cylinder 201 hp, with a distribution with two valves per cylinder, supercharged Garrett T25 with overboost device, which allows to further increase power (up to 230 hp) and torque of the declared value for a fixed term of approximately 30 seconds, providing a maximum acceleration especially useful when overtaking.
In 1997 she was also equipped with the 3.0 V6 24 valve 220 hp Busso. In 1998, new engines: the 1.8 TS 144 horsepower while the 2.0 TS with variable valve timing, he went to 155 horsepower. In 2003 came the version 3.2 of 240 hp V6 2.0 JTS and the new Euro 4 165 hp, direct injection gasoline

The first major facelift in 1998 brought many improvements in all respects. Inside were the highest quality materials used, the bridge was rebuilt by presenting plastic inserts like aluminum, ventilation vents were replaced, was created a new center console with armrest and glove box and there was a review of most of the commands some of the house taken by Admiral Alfa 166. The interior could be further customized with new colors and the leather package with matching color of upholstery and wall panels and dashboard. The trunk was slightly enlarged and lined with materials sought.
With this update were added as well as some accessories: automatic climate control (the same as the 156), Hi-Fi radio with pictogram navigation system, heated power seats and more. From the technical point of view was further improved suspension, was installed a new generation of ABS braking distributor (EBD), on some models has been presented even an electronic system to stiffen the steering at high speeds also were innovative components electronic, reviewed the whole electrical system as well as several new interpretations of the mechanics. Aesthetically it was adopted the chrome grille on the hood, new paint were taken, and the colored lower fairings and wheel arches were expanded to accommodate new rim design with more generous dimensions.

It also introduced the possibility of mounting a body kit designed specifically for the German Zender GTV from which improves greatly on the aerodynamics of the car. rear spoiler quite showy but following the line of this particular coupe, side skirts and front spoiler with two types (a more aggressive profile, the other series offers eye-catching little later for the 3.0 and 3.2 V6), and the ability to mount the air extractors behind the front fender. The kit was optional for all engine was offered as standard only for the preparations Cup In this way, the top speed was under the variable increments between 6 and 10 km / h if you also have 17 "wheels. Hence the ability to pass from the 3.0 V6 24V 238 km / h to almost 250 km / h, the 2.0 V6 Turbo 245 km / h, the 2.0 JTS to 227, and 2.0 and 1.8 Twin Spark respectively 221 and 215 km / h.
With this redesign, engine speaking, were also presented of the novelties or changes: the 1.8 144cv aspirated, the aspirated 2.0 with variable valve timing 155 hp from the 2.0 V6 turbo was upgraded some components and electronic management and finally was introduced 3.0 with the 6-speed gearbox is available with aero kit at no extra cost, with the performance benefits resulting from them, namely a top speed of 250 km / h (even on paper to depart from the supercharged because it was believed would create more problems sale at the V6 Apiro, given the mental rigidity in Italy to more than 2.0cc engines even if the VAT was just a draw)
In 1999, the Alfa Romeo he created the brand called GTV Cup championship in this competition could join only the holders of the Busso V6 turbo and aspirated versions, especially if the house can buy an already prepared - only for use agonostico re-convertible for road use - the newly formed 24-valve 3.0 V6. This release features aerodynamic kit, a slight revision of the controller to bring the power to 230 horsepower, stiffened suspension kit with dampers and springs sports and given relief by eliminating much of the interior trim. Was achieved on an acceleration 0-100 km / h in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km / h. From here, were also sold commemorative road versions in limited Cup precisely known for the Italian market was the turn of the TS and 2.0 for the export market of 3.0 V6 24V (about 200 pieces ended up in Great Britain). These variants were characterized by the mere presence of the aerodynamic Zender kit as standard, the 17 "rims with 5 holes and a particular construction of the interiors and the aspirated 2.0 also has the benefit of being able to have the Brembo brakes.

Was introduced in 2003 a further update that was not very significant as the previous one, but in particular had a more substantial facelift in front [9], by Pininfarina to create a larger front shield was going to bring the latest styles of house snake. Totally unaffected hand outside the car, while inside was taken a few minor changes: red illumination for instrumentation and controls, lowering the front seat of an inch, light ristilizzazionje saddlery and some details taken from some special series for the period 1998-2003. Was finally adopted on traction control (ASR), a valuable species to prevent slippage during acceleration for performance models.
New engines have replaced the propulsion units: 2.0 16V JTS direct injection petrol Euro 4 165 hp and the 3.2 V6 24V 240 hp. With this configuration and thanks all'aerokit (standard front lip spoiler and optional at no extra charge), the GTV was declared the official statement from Alfa Romeo, with a view to submission to the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 as the Alpha Street front-wheel drive faster with its 255 km / h.

Nice write up !
I've been starting recently to look up Spiders/GTVs for my next Alfa, and I've come across one that had electric and heated seats, with buttons on the side of the chair in the same style as the 166. Never knew this option existed on the 916, any ideea on what trim or MY they started offering this option ?

It's quite over here.

Here's mine, a '98 GTV 3.0 V6 24v.
Grigio Eclisse (eclipse gray), factory sunroof (very nice!) and black leather interior.
Some minor tweaks: 2x70mm Ragazzon-exhaust, xenon-lights.
For the future looking for some GTA-wheels and maybe Q2-diff and sportier springs/shocks.

Here is a good source of information on the 916 GTV & Spider:

Alfa Romeo GTV Spider History Yaroslav Bozhdynsky's Personal Website

Rich ;)

PS photo of my of 4 of my 5 spiders. Yellow & Blue are 3.0 V6, the Red & Silver
are 2.0 TS and the missing car is a Blue 3.0 V6 - off the road at 7 years old in 2008 with a cracked cylinder head after 140k miles - its now the 'spares' car. There were only around 170 V6 Spiders imported into the UK, so I am trying to corner the market :) actually the red and silver cars are not mine but owned by two of my sons - carrying on the tradition !!!
