What has happened to the roll hoop? Was it ripped off when it dug in, or when it hit the barrier? It's not supposed to come off for any reason.

I learned a thing. The Alfa Sauber design has a roll "post" rather than a hoop or triangle. The intake air enters either side of it. Supposed to be just as strong, but can catch on things if you're upside down and flip you. The videos and pics seem to show it's gone, before he got to the gravel. Either torn off the upper body structure, or was worn off dragging (but not in 2 seconds).

The finish on the halo is of course completely worn off to bare titanium, but the post is just not there. It's lucky as hell that halo was there.

Yeah, there seems to be a massive flaw there.

They really need to integrate the roll-over hoop behind the drivers head into the main structure or even the halo. Looks like it was never there in the pics above, well
not a metal one. the CF or glass fibre version doesn't cut the mustard.

He was very lucky.

Cheers.

The roll blade, as they refer to it, in lieu of a hoop or roll bar was torn off after the initial impact. You could say it did its job at the moment, but obviously did not withstand the continuous extreme shear force of the car sliding upside down at speed. This will resume the discussion, I think, of a traditional roll bar (hoop) versus the aerodynamic blade. Zhou is alive because of the halo, as he stated. That was indeed a scary accident.

A triangular shape or even an arch (ask the Romans or the people who built Notre-Dame) is a much stronger shape than a post. The rules could state it has to be a two-legged hoop with minimum X width at the base. It can't detach, either - it has to be part of the chassis or connected with a stronger joint than the material.

I agree 100%... but what the FIA and F1 will do after review of this, who knows? A roll bar hoop is inherently much more resistant to being ripped off than a projecting vertical device like a "blade".
