Hi, I have just gone to great pains to replace a rear wheel bearing and an oil seal. The Spider has just failed it's MOT on wheel bearing play on the side I have changed and a small amount of oil is leaking again from the shaft. Has anyone any ideas about what I have done wrong and what I can do. The wheel bearing was removed and fitted on the shaft by an Alfa specialist, but I did the final build up.

Many thanks

I just replaced my rear axle bearings and seal in my Spider. No oil leak, but still have lateral play at the wheel end of the axle. Have just removed my differential and found my carriage bearings have lots of play in them. In process of replacing carriage bearings to see if this eliminates the wheel play. Will see if that cures the problem.

In the US at least, all the rear wheel bearings available seem to have a tiny bit of play in them, even new. Tech inspectors in most of the race groups know this, but we don't have MOT type license testing like you do, at least not in Calif.

There are two size rear seals, one for 2000 and one for earlier diffs with different axle size.

Did you use a smear of gasket goo/silicone on the contact face of the axle tube?
I too was sent by mistake and installed a 2000 axle seal on a 1600. Leaked like a sieve.

Andrew is correct. Even in the late 80's when you could get OEM bearings. The new ones had play. Between SKF and FAG { Fischers Aktien-Gesellschaft } the latter had the least play.
