Beginning the dis-assembly of my gearbox. Before I can remove the rear cover, I need to extract the yellow-zinc plated "fixed cap" that is pressed into the top of the tower (see photo below).

Has anyone found a "safe" method to pull this ring/cap out of the tower without twisting, bending or damaging it? I'm afraid I will only dent the ID opening if I slide a large screwdriver through the hole and under the lip and begin pushing down on the screwdriver handle.

Cover removal.

It`s not complicated.

If this is a problem for you, then stay out of the gearbox.............

Success - thanks!

Thanks for the tips gentlemen. Mine was in there pretty tight, and would not budge with simple pulling, but I finally managed to pry it out (with no damage to the ring) by levering a hefty screwdriver against a plastic trim removal tool that I positioned on one of the breather heads:
