well let me be a little clearer..... its not a gta, gtaj ,or gtam chassis, it does not have a gta engine .... it has a twin spark.....
so really i don't know where ,but definetely not much to do with a gta ....
maybe in the gtv section ? i don't know .. just seems that it does not relate to anything to do with a gta.
but whatever ... no problem with me i'll just simply omit cheking daily this topic from now on in the GTA section.
i'm sure your project will turn out very nice though .
cheers.
if the discussion goes that way: I agree it had to be posted in the GT/GTV section, not GTA, but, considering arguments in post above:
GTA/GTAM is twin plug, so is TS....
Chassis of GTA and GTAM both are steel, just like the GT/GTV ...
Only outer body is alu, and for the GTAM even just steel is possible, with only the extensions put on...
And the GTA is related to the gt/gtv....or am I missing something..

:p

for using the parts from Alafapanels: these are nice, but remember that because the car is a monocoque considarable strength comes from the welded on outer panels... You cannot just replace these with glued/poprivited plastic without considerable changes to the structure to compensate for the loss of strength...

Third opinion-

I agree -this thread and any others that are not about the cars listed for this section should be moved/started -whatever -in another section. No one is saying anything negative about this thread- just that it should be moved, thanks, Fred.

i spoke to the chap at alfapanels a few days ago.. he said he has rebuilt 105 series cars where all panels have been replaced with fibreglass. On average a fibreglass panel is half the weight or less than steel. His own car weighs in at 850kg.
He didnt mention any strengthening etc , so im not sure how exactly the panels are attached..

although looking in the previous posts in this section there are nmerous ones regarding GTA 'replicas'...
im confused

i find it worrying that its such a big deal to some people.. I only wanted to discuss a potential build, but now we just seem to be discussing where this thread should be.
Is there so much snobbery among Alfa owners?

you know it's not snobbery , it's just that the vast majority of those of us that read and place comments on this post, space etc daily .. are admirers , owners ( as I ) or have been owners of these special rare cars , and cultivate the never ending search to try and rescue, research and gather the most possibleamount of information possible relating to REAL original gta ,gtaj and gtam cars , or at most period race cars with gta components installed at the time and with particular race histories , and in last instance a maybe ,
MAYBE even a modern reproduction true to gta ,gtaj or gtam specs could even be of some ( limited) modest interest , by this i mean full alluminum skin , gta engine , gearbox , interirors etc....
this space in the b.b. contains an impressive amount of information , pictures and knowledge on this rare and very appreciated car that alfa romeo built ,
i beg you to pardon me but i do not find it diffcult to understand that a collector of this type of car finds somewhat of little interest the construction of a false car with a modern engine .
As would soemone in a true Shelby forum for example find comments on a mail order shelby kit car .
Please do not consider this Snobbism of any sort , just as you said since this post has drawn several responses to your quesitions I ( we ) thought it appropiate for it to be relocated in another area of closer interest to your theme.
I definetly think it may have more appropiateness in the gtv forum as i would guess there are several "custom" gtvs in that forum . i seldomly read it.
The fact that you are an alfa owner to me is relative of interest , you may own a similar make car but our interest and point of view could be as varied as the colors of the rainbow. I am a little shy of the "implicit " borthehood alfa ownership is supposed to bring ... and by no means do i mean to be offensive , i am simply sincere , we have never met so we cannot presume something that may or may not be.
Given this i honestly wish you the best of luck in creating your car , if well executed it may very well be very fun to drive and quick . best of luck .

Where should this thread be located?

hi Everyone

my forst post here.. im new to Alfa, coming from having owned Marcos, Ginetta, alpine-renaults..

i just sold my '77 alpine renault and im kinda decided now on having a GTA rep to run along side my '63 ginetta G4 race car

It will be road/track day car. I really like the wide body flared arches look, but i want a step nose car.. So would i be right in saying that the step nose cars that wore arches were GTA 1300 juniors and not the larger engined variants .??

If so, would it be a bad idea to make a flared step nose and run it with 2litre for reliability/performance...?
is it a shame to have to cut the arches if they are good..
are tyres for the 8-9 inch wide rims gonna be extremely expensive..?
would it be wiser/more desirable to keep the car with standard bodywork..?

i may have found a donor, a '71 GT junior..
help with the above appreciated, thanks for any advice :)

shad

Dear Shad,

The above questions were what you were asking us. Let me try to explain why the discussion drifts in the direction of 'does this topic belong here'.
If you desire a stepnose car with a wide body (wheelarches) and 13 inch/8 or 9J wheels, this would make it the replica of a GTA 1300 Junior with or without the aluminium body and other GTA 1300 Junior goodies.

Replacing the 1300 or 1600 engine with a 2 liter is off course possible. That would make it some sort of hybrid between a narrow body 2000 GTV and a wide body 1750/2000 GTAm/GTA 1300 Junior. Nothing wrong with that.

But if you want to discard the wide wheelarches and keep the body narrow, what we are really talking about is some sort of fast 2000 GTV trackday/roadcar with a stepnose front. 13 inch/8 or 9J wheels will not fit a 'narrow' body, so they will have to be discarded in favour of 14 or 15 inch/5,5 or 6J wheels in order to keep the car streetlegal/racelegal.

So it seems you are drifting away from the idea of a wide body GTA 1300 Junior replica and arriving at the idea of a fast narrow body 2000 GTV trackday/roadcar with a stepnose front. Great idea if you ask me. But if that is what you want, this question is better of in the GT 1965 - 1974 chapter in my opinion.

On the other hand, if you want to build a stepnose car with wide wheelarches and 13 inch/8 or 9J wheels, this would make it a more or less faithful replica of a GTA 1300 Junior with or without the aluminium body and other (Autodelta) goodies. If so, this car would be interesting to discuss here (in my opinion).

Just my 2 cents!

Ciao, Olaf

Hi Shadmonk

A definition of `snobbery`; the trait of condescending to those of lower social status.

I, being British - as I assume you are living in London - feel this is an inappropriate comment to make. We are not snobbish on this forum.

Your opening request asked various details about building a road/track Alfa. It was answered frankly, from different viewpoints as you would expect given the very general nature of the question.

In subsequent discussion your questioning has suggested a different beast to a GTA/derivative so, some are suggesting gently you will get a better response on another forum. At the risk of incurring the ire of the moderators I would suggest [email protected] as a useful source of info. or elsewhere within ABB and places have been suggested.

GTA`s have certain intrinsic characteristics that need to be included in any replica -- just look at Alfaholics cars for my take on this -- none of which you propose, hence the inappropriateness of this particular forum.

Snobbery? No just trying to be helpful to point you in a direction where you will get better feedback to your particular needs.

We are all Alfisti here and wish all new members to the clan our best wishes -- more often than not this is a labor of love without financial reward....

Well said Richard (S), you must be the only Brit left in Tokyo, but the problem seems to in the framing of the initial question. I don't want to take up extra space but would invite Shadmonk to contact me via PM so we can meet in London and discuss his project pleasureably off line.

AT no point did i suggest anything other than a GTA replica, be it wide or narrow. I mentioned that i was still unsure regarding the flares, due to the problems involving cutting arches, wide tyres Etc etc. My original question did mention whether it may be wiser to stick with the narrow body.

The alfaholics GTA replica, is EXACTLY the sort of thing i would be looking to do if i didnt go with the wide body. Their replicas are also made with a TS engine, and Max's runs a 2 litre (i think?).
How is this different to what i proposed above? I am new to this so forgive me if i have overlooked anything.

I even mentioned in the thread that i would prefer a period correct engine (even if it is a 2litre)
when it comes to the exterior/interior im looking to do period GTA look with correct seating/instrumentation. So im aiming for a real GTA look, not a fast road GTV etc as suggested.

the last thing i want is to offend anyone, but you can maybe understand my point of view as an enthusiast who simply wanted some advice.

As u may have gathered i am a car nut and although i dont own an alfa yet i am totally committed to the idea of this project.
Im glad for all the useful advice so far...thanks

Edit:: stuart thanks, thats very kind of you
