A couple of questions about my 2.0L engine.
Should I use some kind of gasket compound on the head - intake manifold
gasket? My concern is getting a good seal at the water passages.

I am replacing the gasket on the lower sump cover, looks like it was installed
with some kind of red paint like goop. What should I use on the new paper
gasket?

I wouldn't use anything on the manifold gasket. There's relatively little pressure on it anyway. As long as the mating surfaces are true, they'll be no problem.

The bottom oil pan often gets a lot of abuse. It's aluminum, has small bolts holding it in place, has a narrow mating surface, and is subject to being knocked pretty hard. Some permatex that designed to go on paper gaskets would probably be prudent, but it sounds like the PO just slopped on the RTV. I'd inspect the trueness of both surfaces very carefully. Look for cracked or distorted bolt holes.
