H,

'87 Quad, non-mechanic here. Just got in to car this morning and noticed my stick shift arm has very excessive play in neutral - - easily flopping around in the leather boot. Easily gets into gears however, but I didnt want to take the chance of driving it and the whole freakin arm would come out of the boot!

Will tow to my Alfa mechanic this week - - any thoughs on what it could be?

Thanks in advance

At the bottom of the shift lever there is a cross bolt that secures the lever to a stub on the top of the transmission. It is likely that bolt is loose. It's a bit of work to get to it - removing the console and the rubber boot(s) on top of the transmission.

I second ghnl - if not simply worked loose, you might find the threads on this bolt have stripped - it cannot really come out in your hands unless the bolt drops out - as it goes through a notch.

Thanks guys - - this is what I thought when I looked at the mechanics manual. I better tow it as I live in NYC.
