My tach always reads high. Usually around 2500 with the engine off, so it reads near redline as I drive. If I tap on the pod It will drop about 1000 rpm, so the problem appears to be in the tach itself. Any ideas on how I might adjust or loosen up the tach needle? This is the S3 type tach, in a separate pod from the speedo.

I sent the tach from my '85 to Palo Alto Speedo shop for a rebuild and calibration. IIRC, it was about $120, but now it's accurate and smooth.

The '85 tach is electronic (gets a signal from the coil, I think?). Yours sounds like a mechanical problem inside the thing. I would open it up and take a look, the problem may be obvious, mechanically it's pretty simple. It's not hard to open, just take it out of the car and uncrimp the metal around the circumference. Maybe just a little lubrication on the bearing points would do the trick.
