79 was a mechanical tach wasn't it?

If yes, the drive cable goes to a fixture on the water pump.

If electric, the gauge gets a trigger signal from the coil -ive terminal.
Dunno your specific color, but later models did it with a white wire.

The 79 I'm working on has an electric tach. Two wires, one 12V and one a signal from the minus side of the coil. Alas, both wires are white.
I have the wiring diagram in a PDF from papajam. Tell me your email and I can send it.

Andrew,
The 1979 Spider R5 version diagram has a 12VDC pink wire to power the tach while the trigger wire from coil negative is white. Did I send you the R5?

Yes Jim you did. I was referring to the actual wire colors in my car, not from the wiring diagram, which does show pink.
