I have a 79 spider with a 2.0L that is in the process of being rebuilt. In our shop manual it shows marks on the crankshaft and idler gear, however I see no marks on either gear. Looking for any advice, has anyone had this problems? do I need to have the marks? The crankshaft gear can only go on one way because of the crankshaft key -- does it matter how it matches with idler gear?

It makes no difference. The camshaft to crankshaft relationship is set with the cam sprockets.

Yep. As long as you get your crankshaft mark and cam marks aligned, position of the intermediate sprocket doesn't matter.

Completely agree with what’s been said. But have always been curious why the factory put the marks on in the first place? Anyone know?

It probably seemed somehow "right" or "necessary"; maybe they initially had in mind a different timing scheme? But once the front cover is on you can't see the marks, so it becomes irrelevant except on a total teardown.
