I am looking at buying a 74 spider, but it is set up for race and has a locked rear differential. The current owner bought the car this way and does not know how it was done, or how it could be un done.

Does anyone know if it is able to be restored to the way it was before? If I bought the car I would be making it back into a street car.

Thanks

Chances are that the spider gears were welded up. This allows 100% of the power to go to both wheels. Can it be restored, sure. A couple ways. Replace the center section with the ring gear, pinion and differential. Or swap out the entire rear axle. For the effort to change out the spider gears, you might save the time by doing the whole rear axle. Depending upon where you are, you might find someone with a spare rear axle they want to get rid of.

Welding up spider gears is hard on tires and makes the car impossible to move unless it is driveable, as the rear tires won't move independantly.

Make a post to the "Wanted to Buy" section of the BB and ask for a differential or center section. Someone must have one they want to get rid of?
