Leaped into the beast this morning, started the engine and.... nothing. Normally when depressing the brake pedal there is a faint click from the transmission lever and it can be moved out of Park, but this morning it was stubbornly silent and we weren't going anywhere.

Checked some fuses, invoked a few Anglo-Saxon curses and even slammed a couple of doors but it is still sitting there sulking.

Any ideas?

Matthew

Check if the heater doesn"t leak. it's situated above transmission control unit and drops from it can cause such troubles.
Unfortunatelly heater is not the toughest part of 166.

Probably a bad brake light switch so doubt you have any brake lights either. Same thing happens to 164 later models with brake light switch as a potted shunt in one of the switches wires at pedal goes bad.

You should have a manual overide button access hole in center console side carpet panel you can push button on interlock solenoid to unlock shift lever. You still won't have brake lights until you cut out potted shunt and splice wires together.

No real need for a new switch if shunt the problem. I have had to do this to a few later model 164s.

Report your findings.

It was the heater. It fried a couple of solenoids apparently but luckily the transmission computer survived. It will be off the road for at least a fortnight pending part$$$ being flown in from Italy.

Think this might be the end of the love affair.
