1988 ALFA ROMEO MILANO VERDE
Car will now be on BAT. It is no longer available on this site.
In 1985 Alfa Romeo celebrated 75 years of production by launching the Tipo 161/162B, with model name “75”, except in the American market where it was known as the Milano (celebrating Alfa’s hometown.) Designed by Ermanno Cressoni. Its striking wedge shape was bang up to date as was its rear-drive platform-the rear mounted clutch and 5-speed transaxle is linked with a de Dion
tube, the front end is torsion bar- with a catalog of motors topped by a 3-liter V6 (plus limited slip diff.) American cars came only with the 2.5 and
3-liter sixes, the latter quoted at 188hp at 5800rpm, and only for three model years, 1987-1989 and in four different packages : Silver, Gold, Platinum and Verde. The last rear wheel drive car completely designed and produced by Alfa Romeo.
This 1988 Milano Verde was purchased by the current owner in April of 2020. The car lived in Encino, California, since 2014, and it represented a good opportunity to buy a top of the line Milano in his favorite color and in really nice original condition. In fact, it appears that the paint on the car is most likely original, with the exception of the hood and trunk bonnet that have been re-cleared at one point.
At the time of the purchase, the car showed 83,460 miles, however Carfax reported an odometer roll back between 1993 (75,500 miles) and 1995 (50,327 miles). Additionally, a service record dated 9/21/94, showed the car mileage of 46,243.
Today, the car shows 91,585 miles on the odometer and it has been cared to the highest standards. The current owner decided to tastefully beautify and improve the car in both look and performance.
The Recaro seats were reupholstered both in the front and rear. The headliner was replaced.
A new Nardi steering wheel with yellow stitching was installed and the center console arm-rest lid was upholstered in black Alcantara with yellow stitching. Alfa Romeo floor mats were purchased, trunk rubber seal was replaced, and a Pioneer Bluetooth head-unit was installed. Furthermore, new square switches with orange markings replaced the old ones, and new power windows, motors and regulators were also installed together with a new windshield.
In order to improve the handling, five new 15” Centerline wheels were purchased wrapped in G-Force Rival BF Goodrich tires; Koni yellow shocks were installed in the four corners together with the red lower rear springs and a larger front anti roll bar.
Cosmetically, the upgrade also included new Euro front grill, corner lights, and left/right OEM rear view mirrors. The gray body-line strip was refinished. The ARC computer was rebuilt.
Please note that the cruise control is not operational. The sunroof tilts but does not roll back, and an A/C toggle switch was installed to replace the factory Rotary switch in order to turn on the A/C Compressor. The A/C works well!
Mechanically the Performateke shift linkage were installed, and additional work included the installation of 164S (3.0 liter motor) cam shafts, rebuild the trans axel, replace the clutch, rear brakes, belts, tensioner pulley and drive shaft donuts (all 3). Well documented service records since 1994!
To celebrate all the work done to his Milano, the current owner drove the car to the Monterey Peninsola this past August to attend the Carmel-By-The-Sea Concourse On The Avenue and Concorso Italiano.
A test drive confirms my expectations that this Alfa Milano offers accelerating performance, satisfying handling and brilliant drivability. It is very rare to find a Milano that has been always loved and cared for all its life, but that was really brought to the next level by the passion and vision of its “care taker”. This Alfa Romeo is in wonderful condition, ready to tour, event, show, or enjoy on the open road by its next custodian.
