Well,
Now that you guys have bailed me out of my many head gasket questions and tales of woe, the car is running great . Problem is, I need a GPS to tell me how fast I'm going!!
My 85 Spider Veloce speedometer does not work. Neither does the odometer. I can disconnect the cable from the white control box in the engine compartment and spin the spline of the cable. The speedo moves and seems to be OK.
Question...what is the purpose of this magic little white box? The cable that goes into the bottom of the box seems to be OK as I cannot turn the spline. I assuming that the spline is connected to the tranny and is held firm by the gearing, etc.

Can I bypass this little box?

What can be the problem?

Thanks,
Joe

Yes, you can bypass the 'box'. It is a mileage counter to trigger the dash light for the O2 sensor every 30,000 miles. If you use the longer one-piece speedometer cable from an earlier model you can bypass the mileage counter.
