1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6 Balocco SE #218 of 350 - SOLD

- Black leather seats with Balocco red stiching - great condition
- Red Balocco carpeting
- Sunroof
- All the electrical and mechanical work fine
- Engine really clean (doesn't leak oil)
- 15 inch BBS Racing Wheels (spare tire is the original Balocco)
- Performance: Headers, Suspension (with yellow Koni shocks)
- No rust
- No accidents
- Previous work done to the car: headers, suspension, catalitics, timing belt, brakes, tune up, BBS racing wheels and stereo system worth over $5000
- AC needs charging
- Needs new tires

I spoke with Automobilismo Storico Centro Documentazione of Alfa Romeo to verify the VIN numbers. According to their records this car was manufactured on June 1, 1982.

The pink slip is clear and in my name. I'm an Alfa Romeo mechanic and specialists with over 40 years experience and serviced this car in 1985-86. I've driven it the past couple days and it drives very fast and handles incredibly with it's performance suspension. This Balocco is originally black and a special order. The previous owner has passed away and didn't leave any records, but he told me he bought this Balocco at the Indianapolis race track in 1984. It was brought over from Italy, with the race car team, and was used on the Indy track as a pace car. After the race he bought it, as-is, and took it back to California.

This car was sold and then the buyer backed out because he said he couldn't afford it. Only serious buyers please.

Seats - correct

Very pretty GTV6, but can you really say it is a "rare" Balocco SE when the exterior that made it a Balocco and distinguished it from other GTV6s is no longer present?

To answer some of your concerns:
Paint - Is correct. This was specially made from the factory as a pace car, with black paint. This was what the original owner told me.

Wheels - The spare is correct, and the wheels were installed for racing performance


Paint - incorrect

Original owner's claim as to paint color is easily verifiable with Centro Storico.

This is one very sharp looking GTV-6, whether correct or not. I would be proud to drive it.

It certainly looks like it's the original color, and yes, that's easily verifiable. What might be more difficult to verify is that it was originally a Balocco. I have no idea how you would do that. Either way, it appears to be a really nice GTV6.

It certainly looks like a nice GTV6 and the way that prices are moving, it may look like a steal in a couple of years time.

I don't understand why anyone would place a higher value on a Balocco or a Maratona. Both of these "special" models are identical mechanically to 82 or 85 GTV6s. This particular GTV6 appears to be a very nice example. The badges/carpet/stripes/ground effects are a matter of taste (I vote no).

I think it looks great, I love those wheels. Why is it that some people think the words correct and original are synonymous?

I think it looks great too, a very nice looking GTV6. When it comes to classic cars though originality and correct are synonymous and important measures of value, especially true when it comes to "special edition" or "limited production" cars, even sticker/trim specials like the Balocco.

When I was in the Baltics in the late-90's there were a lot of pre-war BMW 328s that retained the body, instruments, and badges but had been converted to Soviet running gear and engines. Although the sellers did not agree, the cars were not BMW 328s by any stretch of the imagination.

At least when I was at the factory tracing my Balocco they thought all of them were red, although it is not unheard of with Italian record keeping that a special order existed - should be easy enough to verify and would add to the story - is it a unique black Balocco or a black GTV6 that had the Balocco interior/badges added?

Value is subjective - I highly value originality to the point of removing radios from cars that came without them like my Fulvia (doesn't impress dates I can assure you) - whereas others value modified cars that have changes in performance, comfort, and aesthetics they prefer. One measure of value isn't any better than another, it comes down to what the buyer wants. I only pointed out the "incorrect" aspects because the car is advertised as a "rare" Balocco, which unless it is a one-off factory special order it really isn't.

So it sounds like it is not #xxx of 350, but rather it sounds like #1 of 1 made - if the seller's claims are to be believed. Alfa pace car? Headers, different pistons, and different cams...in 1982, when ordered new? That engine w/ FI spec would have only been in production 1 year. Seems highly unlikely. Very curious about this one.

Any way you look at it, in my opinion, it is a very nice, solid GTV6. Which are getting to be a rarity these days, and certainly more so in the near future.
That price is very fair, and will be considered a serious bargain soon.

And, no, I have never really found Special Edition GTV6's to be worth significantly more in the near past and current market. That will change with time, but now a good GTV6 is a good GTV6,,
Whether a Balocco, A Maratona, an 81 or an 86 !!!!
They ALL are great !!

It is a nice looking car, but there are several issues with this one. Balocco's were a limited edition in 1982 that had the following features:

Red paint
Black body stripe with "Balocco S.E." and quadrafoglio badges
Anthracite Campy wheels
Black leather interior with red stitching and carpets
Balocco badge on glovebox

Here is a photo of one with the original paint scheme.



Some issues with the OP's car:

  • The OP's car is obviously not red. Either it was a black car that the interior and Balloco badges were transposed, or it was repainted black at some point in time.
  • The wheels are BBS wheels are also not original, and date to the 1985-86 Callaway vehicles.
  • A Balocco would have an 85mph speedo. The OP's car appears to be a later speedometer.
Either way, it is a very nice looking car even though it is not original. Good luck with the sale.

In the long run, the Maratona will be the special edition to own. The looks are really the epitome of the 80's.

My thought is all Balocco's are red. Wasn't someone else selling a dark green Balocco that was in equally nice shape. He stated he repainted it.

Don't let these comments deter you from your car. You have a nice one and wish you good luck selling it.

For the record, not all Maratonas are silver. Two were black and one red. The red one resides in Austin and it ain't a repaint!

I believe the black one belonged to Auto Volante, the makers of the Maratona kit?
