As mentioned, I built the engine and got it running and together as a complete car. I got it from a SoCal friend. It's been a few years now, has had a fair amount of work since my time.

Always a roll of the dice there. I sold a stunning black 79 Spider last year, Spica, only the nose had every been repainted, went for $11,000. I thought it was worth 50% more but the market didn't. Was in Calif with cat and a fresh smog check. This one had Spica in my time, carbs now as you see.

Please reread the initial presentation and photos. This is a great Spider that was setup by Chris DeMinco, who was awarded the SVRA Mechanic of the year. The engine, built by Andrew Watry, runs strong and is fresh. We converted to Webers when the Spica pump starting acting up. We wanted the car finished and went with the carbs. The Spica system is included with the sale. Chris completely rebuilt the suspension and installed Koni shocks. I have been driving 105/115 chassis cars since 1966. This is one of the best handling and riding Alfas that I have ever experienced. The 4.10 differential makes for a great highway car. It will make someone very happy.

The complete original Spica system comes with it - but it is currently set up with dual 40 DCOE carbs with 32 mm chokes.

Thank you. was this a catalytic converter equipped "California legal" car? I don't recall if this was one of the years where there were 49 state cars as well as california legal cars. I'm in california, so that part is key for me.

Yes, I'm told California cars had converters starting in the mid 1970's - easy retrofit and can be bought new if required.

Eventually the smog police stormed the ramparts and that was that. Car came to me, I built it, sold out of state, though it did have a perfectly fine running Spica setup at the time and likely would have passed with a cat. But I knew it was going out of state so I didn't worry about it.

I have a friend who owns a smog test facility. He told me about the visual inspection process - everything that was on the car (smogwise) when new must still be on the car or if a replacement part was used, it must be CARB approved. That's the letter of the law. The spirit of the law is that smog equipment was installed to clean our air and tests are required to make sure the car doesn't pollute more than it should. So, what I always thought was odd is that you can have a completely stock car that's not tuned properly, but it passed the emissions test, but you can't have a car that has been improved upon, pollutes less, but CARB hasn't approved the changes.

I first ran into this when I took a trade in on an older, but very clean Honda Civic that had a cold air intake added. It's suppose to make the car run cleaner (less restriction and colder air), however since the part didn't have the CARB sticker, it failed the smog test. I had to buy the old air box, hoses, etc - then have it installed. I don't know if the car ran any cleaner, but it passed the smog test and I was able to sell it.
