The amount of the reserve may be less a question for the Alfa BB brain trust, and more what you can negotiate with the people at BaT. For a project car, they may argue for no reserve (not that I'm suggesting that would be a good idea from your perspective).

Well, I guess $20K becomes your floor for setting a reserve with BaT. If they won't go that high, then some other sales channel or accepting the son's offer becomes your safer bet.

Tough to say. Certainly less than $75K! The extent of rust in the unibody and condition of the spare engine will be key.

BaT will have a discussion with you about reserve or not and the amount. Some cars they'll take only no-reserve.

So the guys son who you owe your career to has offered you $20k for a vehicle that will cost more to restore than its worth and you turned him down? Seems a fair offer and has value on alot of levels. Sell the kid the car would be my vote.

It's a shame it sat outside for so long. After looking at all of your pics, it's apparent that every square inch (centimeter since it's an Alfa?) will need to be touched. $20K seems like a generous price unless the spare motor is completely rebuilt and ready to run.

Thanks everyone for the great and useful comments. The “joke’s” on me. I had only seen his son once and he knew about the car but had never seen the car! He assumed it had been in storage the whole time and had not seen the car ever since he was not born when I received the car.
I sent him an email giving first right of refusal and told him I thought the car was worth 20-50 k. He offered 20k based on the teaser photo THEN looked at the current photos. Offer withdrawn so son is out of the picture. His response was to send photos of his 348 getting new engine and his Modena parked next to it with a freshly restored Pantera he is getting ready to BAT.

So…….now I am thinking to put the car on BAT without the spare engine and no reserve. Maybe get 5-10 k and rebuild the engine. I would then sell the freshly built engine with the new cams.
Frankly a rebuilt 2600 engine should be worth a lot.

The engine is really sellable only with details on the rebuild. So if you go that route, take tons of photos, save all receipts, etc etc. Personally, I would be hesitant to buy a rebuilt motor unless I knew the builder and could be assured of the quality of the rebuild. This is not to say you arent skilled -- but its risking a lot to buy a rebuilt motor off someone that doesnt have a known reputation in the field -- maybe you do and have a references? That would certainly help.

I agree with comment about rebuilt engines. No question, build will be documented. Receipts logged. My mechanic history offered up. Engine will be run on dyno. This will be a first class, no corners cut, rebuild. From an Anal compulsive, detail oriented vascular surgeon, whose previous career was an auto mechanic for BMC San Francisco. I hate working on cars. I love working on engines and transmissions which is the main reason I am not going through the restoration process.

Agreed. This one sold for $20K (albeit it is a CI 2000) but also came with a custom cabinet and a rebuilt gearbox and everyone knew who the seller was (along with his reputation). What is the cost to properly rebuild one of these, $7K-$10K? What is it worth after being rebuilt?

I'd call that CI 2000 in a cabinet an outlier in terms of value.
Hard to say if a 2600 engine is more or less valuable than a 2000 CI. 2000 can be used, and frequently are, in 1900s, which are a whole different value proposition.

I think a lot more to rebuild. It's roughly 40 hours, aside from the valve job, to do a Nord engine. A 2600 has got to be more hours, and a ton more money for parts. I'd think closer to $20,000 to rebuild. I realize I'm living with California labor rates.

Parts are around 3k. machine work 2k tops. Assuming mild machining needs an pistons not needing replacement and labor is free (me) the cost will be low.
Try finding any rebuildable 2600 engine available for sale in any condition and it will cost upwards of $10,000 plus parts plus machine plus labor.
so yea someone is going to need around $20,000 for a running engine. Which is why I plan to go this route.

You know it is the type of engine I could easily keep as a piece of sculpture especially knowing it could motor on someday I am semi retired (love what I do 3 days a week ) and find rebuilding “exotic” engines is akin to therapy. I am working on a 308 and a 3.2 carrera engine currently. So I won’t stress about whether someone will want the engine-cause I am sure it would be a matter of time.
I rebuilt many a Jaguar DOHC six and have a similar engine in my X5. Sweet running and sounding configuration.

I volunteered to help a guy sell a very rusty, substantially dented, dismantled 2000 a few years ago. BaT, no reserve. $40,000.

This 2600 should bring far more than that. You really should consider No Reserve.

By definition, you cannot have two “matching numbers engines”. I’d remove that comment.

The estimates i see above for a good quality engine overhaul, are no longer correct.
