Dear Alfisti,

I have a 1966 Giulia sprint GT which has a standard 1750 engine fitted.

I have bought a set of IAP carburettor performance cams. Part # 92650 , timimg 48 72 72 48, 11mm lift and overlap is 96 degrees. These will be going into my standard 1750 engine.

I suspect my engine would benefit from having the distributor advance curve varied.

I would be grateful for any help as to what advance curve I should have on my distributor.

I am considering using a Shankle Sport curve set out in a 1980s Alfa Ricambi catalog.

Any suggestions on an approriate curve would be most appreciated.

I haven't found anyone that really knows much about these curves except Jim K in his 4 cylinder book. He mentions the Bosch 009 (or is it the 006) distributor in his first book and outlines a procedure to get the springs out of a VW and install them. I found him on this BB and quized him on it, as I was ready to do something like that and he said all the prevailing theory had changed since he wrote the book. Maybe someone should hail him and have him read this and give us the latest info he has.

I can't help with re-curving your old dizzy, but if you're looking at following Erik's advice and going the route of a new dizzy, Classic Alfa sell this brand new electronic distributor.

According to their blurb it has 16 switchable advance curves, and is more suited to today's fuels.
It sounds good and is about the same price as the rebuilt Alfaholics units.

I have a '67 Sprint GT Veloce. It has a 1600 block, that has a 1750 head bolted to it (Yes, really). Talk about hybrid cars!

Personally I haven't yet played with the advance curve, but I have replaced the points with a electronic conversion kit from www.hot-spark.com - much like the Pertronix kits, but at about a third the price.

The engine has a silky smooth idle now, and a much sweeter and faster throttle response. I highly recommend this as an economical and worthwhile distributor mod.

The electronic distributor is made by a nl-company called 123-ignition: http://www.123ignition.nl/ It has "only" 9 different curves:

0.231.129.036 Giulia Nuova 1300-1600

I think the JF4 has the most aggressive advance curve

It is available i 2 different versions, 1 w/o vacuum connection and 1 with vacuum connection.

From my point of view it looks very good and I am actually considering buying one for my 1300 GT Junior. But I would like to see the different advance curves, does anyone have acces to data concerning the above mentioned 9 (or some of them) distributors ?

Targa Florio - if you don't find a modified distributor approved by someone reputated, don't fit it.
A standard 1750 distrbutor shall be ajusted to 3 (+/-1) degrees fixed advance (F mark on front belt pulley), 40 (+0/-3) degrees at 4600 RPM (M mark). Fix it there and test drive for pinking (full trottel from 1500-2000 RPM up), if pinking is present advance a little more and test again until you don't hear any pinking. You may mis 1-3 HP but you don't harm the engine.
