Hi,

need to source a thermostat for a 1994 164 3.0 24v manual. Some indications are the GTV or 164 12V versions will fit but confused as to whether I should be looking for just the insert or the top housing with insert in place.

Have gone through the sheered bolt issue the last time it was changed, just the insert, and drilled out original failed bolts with extra long 6mm drill. Took ages. Hope won't sheer again this time...

Anyone know of any alternatives to searches for 164 items?

Hopefully you used antiseize compound on the bolt threads and shafts in order to avoid a shearing problem the next time. I also loosen and retighten them just a little one at a time every couple of years, just to be sure they haven't started to seize.

Remember, work at them very slowly, torquing back and forth lightly at first, slowly increasing the back and forth torque, while rapping on the top of the bolts with a hammer once in a while to shock the corrosion and deposits. At first, you will probably not feel any give in the threads, but keep working at it. It took me quite a while to get the bolts to release just a little, but as you torque back and forth, you will be able to feel the give increase with time.

In stock, Complete thermostats or inserts. I have the correct bolts as well. I have cooler 83˚C version, housing/thermostat in stock and 87˚C inserts. If your housing is fine, just go for the insert.

I use anti-sieze ALWAYS!

Del, am guilty of not using anti-sieze but did use zinc-plated bolts and this summer replaced the short bolt with a grade 12.9 one so confident that won't sheer.
Jason, great to know you have these thermostats in stock. Being in Europe it seems to make more sense sourcing a European part from Europe rather than the US but, having said that, will be coming to you if can't get hold of one.
