156 selespeed

Hi everyone, I've owned an 03/04 156 sportwagon for over 2 years with great, trouble free motoring. Just recently it seems the clutch is slipping when pulling away - once I'm going it's fine. The local Alfa dealer says I have a leak and need a whole new selespeed unit ($6000!)
The guy who services my car (an ex Alfa mechanic) and I can only see a leak from the top reservoir and overflow tube. Any thoughts.... thank you, Buz.
