The shop manual says the spark plug gap is 5mm, while the owners manual says .024-.028, a huge difference. Which is correct?

5mm is huge and cannot be correct. My old IAP workshop manual says 0.6 to 0.7 mm, which is about .024-.028 inches.

The 5mm gap in the shop manual is part of the testing procedure for the ignition system -- it is not a gap for the spark plugs in the car. The procedure explains that for testing, the coil high tension lead is replaced by a spark plug wire and spark plug with this large gap. See below:

We always gapped them at .025 at my shop
