The shaft spline nut on this car had previously been located about 1/4” away from the cast steering shaft mount (as mocked up in pic). I have the entire shaft assembly apart at the moment (replacing the mount) and want to understand where that nut is supposed to end up when fully tightened. Is it intended to butt up against the mount as in the other mock up pic? Thanks!

The nut should not bottom out on the cast steering mount. There should be some gap remaining after assembling the shaft and tightening the nut.
