I had to sell her- wife wouldn't let me keep it AND the 911 Carrera. To be honest, I would have sold the Porsche if not for her preferring it. My spider was the most fun to drive car I've ever experienced. Please, everyone here: keep your Spiders or live with regret!

Jim- I can't run the engine without that jumper, and if I have a friend crank it over while I listen, neither pump comes on then either. Can anyone think of anything else I might try before shelling out for that relay?

Some good news, I put in a new set of points and a new condenser and the car is idling smoothly and revving freely again (YAY!!!). I do still have a fuel system issue though, in that the pumps will not operate without the relay pins being jumped to power on the pumps as soon as the key is in ON...

I ordered a new points and condenser set yesterday, should be in Friday, just so I can be sure there isn't a hidden problem there. I'm not familiar with "sparks in the dark," are you talking about shorting out somewhere?

So... my car has no VVT bit on the front of the engine. There just isn't anything connected there at all. Never has been since I've owned it. Not sure if I'm supposed to have that, but it did used to make great power without it. Anyways, I plugged a fuel pressure tester into the line just...

I'll grab a fuel pressure gauge from Autozone in a few minutes and give it a shot. I'll grab some hose and replace the old air lines atop the engine while I'm at it. I tested my AFM by matching resistance reading at certain pins as I moved the flap back and forth, and it matched the...

I'm not sure how I would test that pressure even if I had a gauge. The AFM tested good a few weeks ago, although I guess there is the possibility that something is wrong with it. The fuel pressure regulator APPEARS old but intact externally, and all related hoses look good. I did just notice...

Mike- no change from pedal or hand operation. It does seem to start sputtering earlier under more throttle though, like around 3000 rpm under harder throttle, 3400 if I creep it up slowly. It'll let me cruise up to 70 mph still, but I have to creep up to it. Steve- hey! And thanks for the...

No, I am in Florida for a school and only have a tool bag that I put together. The whacks with my mallet didn't cause any rattling noise or change in behavior at all, but I know that's not a definitive test.

Header to back tip is all less than 2 years old except the resonator. I just tried a few whacks with a rubber mallet on the cat and resonator (I have no muffler), and nothing. I also just disassembled the intake and re-checked all the air and electrical connectors. All looks good except for a...

Mike- with a wire jumping two pins in the fuel pump relay, yes. It idles a little rough, but starts and drives fine up to 3200 rpm.

A dremel fine-sanding bit to the points had no effect. Is there a fuel flow device being bypassed by jumping the fuel pump relay? I've got some tinkering time today, and I really want to figure this out.

I don't think so, I've had her up past 4k a few times just after first morning startup in the past. I'm going to try messing with the points some more, see if that helps at all.

Well... I can't really do the smoke thing because of my lack of garage (and stuff) right now, but I did try flexing and squeezing the intake tubing a little while the car was running- to no effect. I'm on the 3rd (different) tank of gas since this started, so bad fuel is out. I did try...

No, the car has no limiter. I've had it over 6k many times, even on the current points setup, although sometimes not intentionally... What's the best way to find mini holes or cracks in the intake tubing? That's about the only thing I haven't been able to check thoroughly yet.

Ok, I've gotten some more time to work. The grounding strap is VERY secure now, the battery connections are clean, fuses are clean, and I am running points successfully... up to 3200 rpm, where it begins sputtering as if the air/fuel mix is wrong. I have adjusted the point gap and timing...

The only reason I can use points is because I have an aftermarket RML dizzy, which has no vacuum advance. How do you test the relay? If I can test mine then I'll at least know if I've found the problem or not. Also, I am not currently in Nevada. I'm in Pensacola Florida for a Navy school...

Still limping, still researching. I haven't had much time to progress, but I'm hoping to find a way to test that relay since the cheapest one I'm finding is about $170. That seems absolutely absurd to me. I just don't even know what else to check at this point, because everything seems to...

Can anyone tell me what components would be replaced by a Megasquirt system? I was thinking that the relay was cheap, but it's over $200 in most cases. Does the Megasquirt eliminate the need for that relay by chance?

    Spider - 105 & 115 Series (1966-1994)
Eric, I'll have to check that later. The car can limp around now due to jumping key-on 12V to the fuel pumps via the fuel pump relay (pin 31 to 87 I think?). The car can't go over 3500rpm and I don't want to leave it like this anyways, but at least now I can get to and from work.
