I turned up a great explanation and diagram of how these boosters work.

Great diagram with explanation. Thank you for posting.

BTW: If you need a new, or rebuilt Bonaldi brake booster for your vintage Alfa or otherwise, please be very careful when you make the purchase. Verify it's 100% Italian or European built, using all the correct seals. There are quite a few "knock off" Bonaldi boosters in circulation, they are made in China, Turkey etc...and they are genuine garbage out of the box.

If you don't believe me, just ask Jeff at Karp's Power Brake:

Here are some photos of an example of a "Knock Off" Bonaldi brake booster. This particular booster fits on a second series Lancia Fulvia. It is believed to be built in China, Turkey, or some other location where Bonaldi would not normally be built, or refurbished. That is outside of Europe/UK. The securing bolts, on both halves of the canister are epoxied into place with what appears to be a JB Weld type of adhesive. There is no brazing on either of the canister halves. The booster came with a green Bonaldi decal on it, and there are no legible identifying brand names, or part numbers, stamped on either of the canister halves. The seals appear to be correct, but personally I would not risk using them. The note in the photo is from Karp's Power Brake Service in Upland, CA. They informed me that not a few counterfeit brake boosters, master cylinders, calipers, wheel cylinders, etc...for all kinds of cars, ranging from GM to Ferrari, are really helping their business to thrive. Hope this helps.

Does Karp's rebuild Bonaldi boosters and if so, what do they charge for two?

Thanks.

Yes, Karp's does indeed rebuild Bonaldi, Benditalia (Bendix) and many other brand brake boosters. I am not sure what their cost are. I suppose the final cost depends on to what extent you want the booster to be refinished. They do offer different refinish options. I was referred to Karp's by a local SF Bay Area Ferrari/Italian car repair service. For price quotes, I would contact Karp's directly. See their url listed in a post within this thread. Hope this helps.
