Somehow, I knew the word gripe would come up.

Can I have leave it for dinner and take it for desert?

Hello-

For some unknown reason the 'BB' decided I needed a new 'pass-word'...after investing over an hour(an hour I'll never get back) trying to use the new 'password' w/out success it seemed easier to re-register w/a new name/password/avatar & info.
I used to be "slam105" & had been on the ARBB for several years. So here I go w/a "new start".

Regards

As a 30+ year IT veteran seems to me the safest way to handle passwords these days is a completely different one for every online service. Safety written on a piece of paper stashed somewhere.

Hello,

Thank you for you patience with us right now. Due to a security breach recently we're getting members of all our forums to reset their passwords. Security of user information is something that we take seriously and that is why a password reset and tightening up password requirements were added to the site. Everyone should have received a password reset by now. If you're encountering an issue or know someone who is please reach out to us using the contact us on the site. We're working hard to get all locked out members back into their accounts as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Danniella

Here's the thing: the only information on a forum like this that we care about is the password. If this site was hacked the way others were, the user IDs and passwords were taken. You should have been explicit in the notification that it was passwords that were stolen. So yes, we should change passwords here, but more importantly, we should change any passwords that match it.

The real exposure is that if you use the same password for banking that you used for the forum, hackers can get in to your bank account. Requiring a military grade password for a forum does nothing to improve real security, and increases the temptation to use the same one for a sensitive site. So it's a bad idea.

That's the nature of my original complaint; I use strong and unique passwords for important personal and financial sites, but would much rather use a simple easy to remember one for the multiple forums I participate in.

Not true. The announcement was that password hashes (not passwords) were stolen. Read on this web page what hashes are -- and various degrees of security of the mechanisms that create and check them. As posted in this thread, I believe upgrading the security module (with stronger algorithms) forced a global password reset.

THANKS!

Forum,

Thank you for your concern and vigilance. It seems I am getting emails on a daily basis supposedly from known friends (their names are on them) bur spurious email addresses. Their email accounts have been hacked, and these hackers want me to access some site they have provided a link to. Very annoying. I never open the link, but I do notify the person, via the correct email address I have stored for them, that their account has been hacked. A strong password is the best defense, I think, against this type of tomfoolery.

Thanks to your efforts, I am going through all my accounts and forum memberships and updating my passwords. That's a small inconvenience with a big reward.

Some people will just gripe and complain about anything! I know, I live with one! Are all of you complainers old Italian women?

You said "... I live with one! Are all of you complainers old Italian women?..."

Actually I'm looking for an old Italian woman. Got any leads?

Milanoguy,

Check out the second one from the right, Narfia Zorbo. She's not much to look at, but word is she can s**k-start a Ducati!
