engine problems

Hello,

Has someone a solution for a spider 4 engine, starts ok, idle speed ok, but when I push the gas pedal the engine dies.
In idle speed the rev-counter goes up and down.

thanks,

Franco

Just to vote as a rookie!!! IMHO you have a fuel "starvation" problem. Check with fuel pressure gauge before the regulator. Simplest is fuel filter, then pump(s).. What say the rest of the crew? Maybe more info will help...length of ownership..service/maint history. Good Luck P

We need a little more info. What type of fuel system (carbs, EFI, or ?). What type of ignition system? What color is your Spider?

carbs S4 (1600 engine) or Motronic Bosch S4 (2000 engine)? - both were to be had in EU.

starts 'ok'- S4 should start right away if everything is working correct.
you say idle speed ok...so about 800/900 rpm, correct?
then you say rev counter goes up/down, so you mean the engine is hunting?

Let's presume its the injected S4:
idles yet dies when you push the gas pedal: that typically points to a bad air leak, major suspect being the big hose going over the engine. Check this for any cracks/splits (you might need to remove it to check underneath)
Injection does not like "false" air

Oh Oh
Just reread DRFs post and it's a series four!!!
I'd still read the "L-Jet" pamphlet as background to the S4 system
Good Luck
Paul

Interesting post by Eric, "ghnl "
If you have an "L-jet" he was involved in a great publication,

I like the concept of "excess air" as a component of "fuel starvation"
So let us know year/fuel system you have

engine problems 1991 spider S4

Hello,

More information about the RED spider : ( for the moment he isn't faster then a green, black, yelow spider)

It is a spider of a clubmember, untill now everything was ok, but during the preparation for a meeting the spider didn't start.
My friend had a visit of a weasel, marten cat, and damaged some cables. We fixed the cables and now the engine starts, idle speed ok, but when we push the gas pedal, the egine dies.

Year 1991 with Motronic system.
Idle speed is normal, the engine runs very well, no hunting or other issues, but the ref counter goes up en down.
Almost everything is changed, ECU, filters, pump, inlet manifold, ...
Fuel pressure is ok, ignition ok, injectors ok.
One thing I find not normal, the ECU is warmer then normal, almost hot.( even the new ECU).
Thanks to all of You for the quick reply.

greatings,

Franco

which wires were eaten (replaced), were they under the bonnet(hood), inside the car, under the car?

why did you change the ECU?

and why was the inlet manifold changed? (have you mixed up some of the connector plugs, maybe?)

Have you adjusted the throttle position switch (TPS) correctly? so when you slightly move the throttle on the inlet plenum with your fingers (ie. just coming off the throttle stop), you hear a faint click in the TPS?

so the engine idles steady but the electronic rev counter needle goes up and down on its own? (that's odd as the rev counter gets its signal from the coil)...check the brown/white wire (signal wire) on the coil negative side is clean and tight and not damaged somewhere along the length....it leads to a plug on the inner wing/fender, near the radiator overflow container.

(coil is wired correctly, I presume...must be I suppose for it to start and idle!)....like here

Hello,

Problem solved, my friend has found the cause of engine failure.
The marter or weasel had eaten more cables under the hood, they were difficult to see,now the engine runs perfect.
Thanks to all for the technical help and the quick response.

greatings,

Franco
