1979 Alfa Spider Veloce Oil Choice

Hi all,
I just got a 1979 Spider Veloce - are there any recommendations for the best oil to use? I've heard that 20w/50 is the best but want to make sure. Is synthetic OK?

Thanks in advance for the help!
Sam

Welcome to AlfaBB, there is plenty of information on oil on the forum, however 20/50 is perfect, you dont need synthetic, mineral oil is perfect, I'm using Penrite now.

Welcome, Sam. Are you aware of our unwritten rule regarding pictures? We like pictures so we think you should post some. They could even be of your Alfa...

I also use Rotella 15w-40. I believe that they have reduced the level of the zinc compounds our engines would prefer but it still has some. The main advantage of using Rotella is that it is a quality oil, it is not expensive (so change it regularly) and it is available almost everywhere (in case you need some while away from home).

👍 All ya gotta do is compare oil spec sheets with Rotella and you will never use another oil, regardless of price......

I think I've entered the twilight zone. Before now I had never heard of Rotella Oil!
I grew up in the So Cal sports car culture. British cars in the 60's. Bought my first Alfa in 1975.
Raced Formula Vee, Ford, and Atlantic throughout the 80's.

I've always used Castrol GTX, Pennzoil, or Valvoline Racing Oil. Redline in the racing engines.
But Rotella? Where have I been?

Oil

If you get desperate you can read the owners manual. Good luck finding finding those products.

Alfa Spider Oil

After not driving my Alfa for a couple of years I switched to Mobil 1 -15W50 as it was on sale.

I ran it for 3 changes and started to notice more leaks and seepage around my 40 year old gaskets.

Then I went back to the traditional Castrol-20W50 that I had been using for 30 years.

After a time there were not nearly as many oil stains on my garage floor.

Unless I was rebuilding the engine with all new bearings and gaskets I would not switch an old engine to full synthetic.

Those engines were made for 20W50 so unless you are someplace that drops below freezing I would stay with traditional oil.
