VAS/vickauto shocks installed!

Alright! All four shocks installed!

Had to use both a strap wrench and a vice grip.. donít ask...

I immediately took the car through its paces and it rebounds beautifully!

Double check my work:

Anyone in the Bay Area need stock shocks? The rubber insulators are in VERY good condition.

A YouTube video I watched really helped before tackling this project.


For the rear, bottom side:

Remember that the shocks are double nut-ed, so focus on holding the upper nut with an open ended wrench and loosening the bottom nut with either another open wrench or if possible a socket wrench.


Stock nuts are 17mm and 19mm, deep sockets and open/box wrenches recommended. A strap wrench and a vice grip works, if possible hold the shaft by the itís bottom most tip (7mm?).

Looks like you had Spica shocks to start with and kept the stock springs. Tell me more about the before and after ride quality. What was the specification on torque or bushing crush? Meaning way back when you would torque until the rubber bush crushed and swelled until it reached the same diameter of the adjacent washer.

Ride quality has improved, less crashing over rough pavement and a lot more compliance.

The rubber bushings were torqued until they closely matched the washers in size. Then the second nuts were locked on. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.

Good work "tremere613" If you don't mind could you report back say every six months with how the shocks are holding up. Also is this Spider a daily driver, a weekend car or ????.

This is a.. only sunny weekend driver. Although I know so many people who drive their spiders EVERY day and everywhere. I think itís because of the sheer number of Alfa mechanics in the bay. Unbelievable!

Iíll report back in 6 months as I could understand your concern about quality/longevity, especially at that price. But you already smartly asked if I was actually putting miles on this thing (asking if I drive it daily or not). So my opinion and experience may differ from someone who is actually putting miles on their car...driving their Alfa on the daily/track.

Stiffer then the Spica shocks then, how's the price compare to Koni Reds?

I use to have Koni Yellow's on the rear and felt they were too stiff with the IPA sport springs I have so I replaced them with a used set of Spica's.

Been thinking about trying the Koni Reds.
