Exclamation Brake pipe broke, very strange and dangerous. Duetto 1967

Last week I was driving together with an MGB -64 and did some Italian Tube-up to warm up my friend. We were heading for the 1900 Garage. Speed was over normal and many turns and bends and hard breaking. When we got 200 meters from the garage, my brakes felt spongy. When I stopped and turned the engine off, I pressed the pedal quite hard, suddenly it went down all the way. Pressed once more and the pedal went to the floor again. Panic. We looked under the Alfa and under the rear axle there was a big brake fluid spot. Very big. Anyway, we checked and it turned out that the pipe going from the 3-way junction had been pressed out. See pics. It could have ended very bad as we had been driving very hard on the way.

I just want to inform that it is essential to check the brakes now and then. The material had cracked wehere you cannot see anything as the nipple holds it down in place.

I got quite scared when I noticed how bad it might have ended. Problem fixed today and the test drive was very fun.

Wow, glad that you're OK. It was smart to pull over when you did! It doesn't happen that way very often with brake fail stories

Are they copper brake lines? (not cupro-nickle) Copper will work hardened then break easily if allowed to flex.

Wille, it might be a good idea to change out all of the brake lines.

Now you know why the DOT passed the requirement for a duel stage master cylinder in 1969.

Sure will do. I have always used DOT best quality over the years. DOT4 since it was launched. My Duetto has a single brake circuit as it is an Euro version. Anyway, I sure will press the brake pedal very hard when in the garage to check for elaks until I replace the other lines.
