while replacing radiator..?

Hello all.

About to replace my defunct radiator.
It has been repaired more than once so I am going to just give it a clean slate.

My question is while replacing the radiator, what are some inexpensive things that should be replaced at same time?
hoses if crapped out/tired I assume?
plastic fan if tired?
fan belt?
Any input appreciated from those more experienced than I.

Thanks again!

Probably just what you think - I have my whole engine out right now (which means the radiator came out too).

I'm replacing ALL of the radiator mounting padding, the two rubber bushings (if I can find them), the heater hoses (which aren't formed special - just generic hose). I'll check the thermostat.

I will flush my heater core too - because I had an OIL-in-the-antifreeze problem. Mine has an electric fan conversion that needs new wiring as well.

mounts

The mounting brackets are available from almost all venders listed here on the board as well as any other you might choose.
inexpensive at least to change them, so,,, why not. Easier than having to after the radiator is re-installed.

check waterpump for leaks
check front crankshaft oil seal for leaks
(both somewhat easier to inspect with rad removed)

You should replace the fan. They are plastic an known to fail with age. It is not pretty when they come apart. Inexpensive

Change the plastic shroud too if it cracked or missing bits. Makes a lot of difference.

OK .
Just a follow up .
Finally was able to complete radiator install on my 87 s3.
Replaced radiator with new unit from Vick, new upper and lower hoses, new clamps, new fan shroud.
Fan was in good order...not faded or brittle so I left it.
Bled out cooling system, replaced fluid, fired up....good to go!!
So far so good.
Was proud of myself for I have never replaced one before.

Thanks for all your input/guidance.

I had one explode at a kinda high speed. The dents in the hood were a nightmare to fix.

Its surprisingly easy with a good kit, I used a cheap kit because I'm fine with DIY, but it sounds like your starting to learn your way round, you've done good so far, once you gain confidence you'll be itching to do other work on your Alfa, good start
