Unable to Release Trunk

I am new to the Forum. We have a 1984 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. It was not manufactured to have a key open the trunk. We have tried the trunk release and it will not open, the cable is not broken, you can hear it click but does not open. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Wanda

If you search the forum, you'll find many solutions. All is not lost and you won't have to drill behind the license plate.

Sorry, but that isn't clear. Are you saying:

- The lever won't move at all
- The lever moves, but the trunk lid doesn't pop up

If the lever won't move, perhaps it is locked (there should be a key slot towards the top of the lever.

If the lever moves, and it feels like it is pulling a cable, and you hear that click back where the latch is located, then try this: Have one person work the latch while the other pushes/pulls on the trunk lid. Try pushing it down and up while the latch is fully pulled.

I had a broken cable on my 'Spider, and was told you need to drill a hole in the rear behind the plate to pop the trunk,,,not true, there is a hole under the rear of the car...there is a posting here of a tool a friend of mine made to pop the trunk, than you can replace the cable...

I can't seem to find the post or any pdf of the owner's manual online...my owner's manual is in the trunk. I bought the car and the trunk cable snapped the first time I tried it. now can't get into the trunk at all. Would sure like some help with the screwdriver trick before taking everything apart.

Where did it snap? What is the screw driver trick?

You'll need to take everything apart to replace the cable.

Thanks!

the cable turned out to be fine....as some suggested here it was the plastic lever that had failed. I tried to replace it with a chrome one from CenterLine as it is much stronger. Unfortunately, you can't use it unless you take the entire cable out and rethread which I think is impossible. So I exchanged it for the original plastic and all is well now. Thanks for the help!
