How/where/with what should I lubricate my speedometer cable?

My speedo needle has started spazzing about and shaking, so I'm guessing the first thing I should do is give it a bit of lubrication. Could someone tell me what sort of grease to use, and how to get it in there? I will probably do the tacho cable at the same time if it's possible, so tips for that would be much appreciated too. I'm really hoping not to have to take the gauges out of the dash.....

There is a commonly available (at auto parts stores anyway) speedo cable grease you can pick up, though package size usually amounts to a lifetime supply.

If you're looking for an alternative, lithium grease is quite acceptable as is the cable lube they use on *Fordom type rotary tools. (*industrial scale Dremel basically)

Unhook both ends of the cable sleeve, slide the cable out, (it'll only come out from one end), grease it up and reassemble.
