Using gas as solvent cleaner?

I’m in the process of restarting the ‘87 Spider after about ten years of storage (life, u know). I decided to drain the gas but now I have several gallons of old gas. I realized it’s a great solvent/cleaner. Just cleans up grease and dirt so well. So, with the understanding that it’s not the safest for ur lungs or plastic parts and keeping sparks and other flammable away, why can’t I use it instead of brake cleaner or other engine cleaner sprays? It’s volatile so it evaporates right away. Isn’t this the “old timer” way of cleaning. (No offense to old timers. I’m getting there soon.) Yes theres a proper way to dispose of the old rags.

Sure, gasoline is what I use. Brake and carb cleaners are flammable and nasty to inhale too. And what other solvent can you get for < $4/gallon? (yea, the gasoline tax is expensive here in California)

I usually follow up the gasoline with a water-based degreaser, like Simple Green or Purple Power. But gas works great to remove the heavy dirt & oil deposits.
